NEWS: Disney Wins 6 Awards at the 2022 Oscars

The 2022 Oscar Academy Awards took place last night, on March 27th. The night was highlighted by several memorable moments, including the first-ever live performance of Encanto‘s “We Don’t Talk About Bruno.”

Disney received 23 Oscar nominations leading up to this event, and they ended up winning 6 awards with 5 different films. Check out their awards — including some for best actresses, best animated feature film, best costume design, and more — here!

First up, Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Encanto took home Best Animated Feature Film. The popular movie has been the recipient of several awards already, including some from the Golden Globe Awards, Producers Guild Awards, BAFTA Awards, NAACP Image Awards, among others.

Encanto is also the first Disney movie ever to have both a Number 1 album and a Number 1 single! Although the wildly popular song “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” wasn’t nominated for an Oscar (since Disney submitted “Dos Oruguitas” instead for consideration as Best Original Song), it was performed live during the awards ceremony by some of the original cast as well as guest celebrity singers.

Ariana DeBose won Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her performance in Steven Spielberg’s 2021 remake of West Side Story. DeBose played Anita in the film. This was the first time an Afro-Latina and openly queer woman of color has received this award. Rita Moreno, who played Anita in the original film, also won an Oscar for her performance in the 1961 movie, which makes Moreno and DeBose the first pair of women to win the award for playing the same character.

For those who have seen Disney’s Cruella, it may come as no surprise that this film won Best Costume Design at the 2022 Oscars. Designer Jenny Beavan accepted this award and has also received recognition for her work on Cruella in the form of a BAFTA award, a Critics Choice Award, and a Costume Designers Guild Award.
