Things to do before your upcoming Disney World trip: triple check your suitcase (because we both know you probably forgot something), plan out the ~perfect~ Magic Kingdom outfit (complete with Mickey ears, of course), and — last, but not least — find out what’s going to be CLOSED during your vacation.
Disney is consistently updating rides, attractions, and hotels, which means that sometimes these things are unavailable for a while. We keep track of all the closures and reopenings in the parks and then bring you the updates so that you’re prepared before you get to Disney World! Check out our full list here of Disney World closures in May.
Magic Kingdom
Walt Disney World Railroad
The Walt Disney World Railroad’s multi-year closure is continuing into May, and a reopening date isn’t quite in sight. Disney World closed this attraction for some refurbishments and because of construction over in Tomorrowland (which blocked the Railroad’s route), and they haven’t announced an end date for the closure yet.
Work on the upcoming TRON: Lightcycle Run roller coaster in Tomorrowland has interrupted the Walt Disney World Railroad’s tracks, which means the train can’t run its usual route around Magic Kingdom. There’s a tunnel taking shape near this coaster, so it seems like the train will run through that when it reopens.
But for now, there is still a section of tracks missing from the park, which means the train probably won’t be reopening anytime soon. We have seen some testing for the Railroad, but a Cast Member told us that the testing was mostly to keep the train’s engine in order and not a sign that the ride is close to opening.
We’ll be looking out for an opening date for the TRON coater, which could signal a return date for the Railroad as well.

Disney’s Hollywood Studios
Fantasmic!
The popular nighttime show Fantasmic! is still closed in Disney World. We miss seeing Mickey battle Disney villains in this amazing show, but we have good news for this closure! Disney has said that Fantasmic! will reopen sometime this year.
We don’t have a more specific opening date yet, so if you’re hoping to catch the show on your next vacation, plan on coming later in the year for the best chance that Fantamsic! will be open. We do know that a few changes are coming to the show, including some new characters and stunts.
Voyage of the Little Mermaid
Voyage of the Little Mermaid is another show that’s closed in Hollywood Studios, but this one does not have a reopening date yet.
Disney hasn’t released any updates about the attraction’s closure or possible reopening, but we’ll be sure to let you know as soon as more information is available.
A popular character meet-and-greet is BACK in Hollywood Studios.
Disney’s Animal Kingdom
Finding Nemo: The Musical
Disney’s Animal Kingdom has some fun shows, like Celebration of Festival of the Lion King and Feathered Friends in Flight. But one show in this park has been closed for a while: Finding Nemo: The Musical. This show is actually scheduled to reopen this summer (in 2022), but it’ll look DIFFERENT when it returns.
The new show will be called Finding Nemo: The Big Blue…And Beyond!, and it will be based on the sequel to Finding Nemo, Finding Dory. You can check out a first look at some of the changes here! Some fan-favorite songs will still be featured in the new show, like “Go With the Flow.”

Disney World Hotels
Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort
Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort is open for guests, but visitors might see some construction going on at this hotel during their stay. That’s because 200 new DVC Resort Studios are being built in the Big Pine Key building.
These new rooms are subtly themed to Mary Poppins Returns, with art that nods to the film and other details like birds on the chandeliers and umbrella shapes on the lampshades.
DVC members and other guests can now book their stay in these new rooms, and the rooms are scheduled to be open in June 2022.
Take a virtual tour of the new rooms here.
Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort
But the Grand Floridian isn’t the only hotel getting some new DVC rooms. An entire new DVC building is being constructed at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort.
The new DVC villas are scheduled to open in late 2024, and they’re “inspired by the early concepts for Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort.” These rooms will sit on the shores of Seven Seas Lagoon.
And besides new rooms, there will also be new recreation offerings and dining options in the building.
The new DVC villas come at a cost — find out what’s closing permanently to make way for this building.
Disney’s Magnolia Golf Course
The Magnolia Golf Course is the largest resort golf course in Disney World. But from April 28th, 2022, through May 8th, 2022, only holes 1 through 9 will be open (the course has 18 holes). From May 9th on, the entire course will be closed.
Disney has said that the course is closing for some big refurbishments. They haven’t announced a reopening date for this experience yet.
Check out a mini-golf course that’s open now in Disney World.
Disney World Water Parks
Blizzard Beach
Disney’s Blizzard Beach Water Park is currently closed. According to the Disney World website, this park won’t open anytime soon — it’s not showing opening times through this summer.
Guests can head to Typhoon Lagoon (Disney World’s other water park) if they’re looking for some water rides, pools, lazy rivers, and themed snacks. As a bonus, H2O Glow Nights are returning to Typhoon Lagoon this year as well!
Learn more about H2O Glow Nights here.
That’s it for our roundup of everything that’s scheduled to be closed in Disney World this May. Keep an eye out for temporary closures as well — technical difficulties, bad weather, or other issues can cause some rides to shut down for a while in the parks. You can see real-time closures on the My Disney Experience app. And stay tuned with DFB for more of the latest updates as you get ready for your upcoming vacation!
