Geoff Morrell Leaving Disney After Short Time in Corp. Affairs
According to an article in The Hollywood Reporter, Disney CEO Bob Chapek sent an email out to cast members late Friday evening advising them that Geoff Morrell, the Chief Corporate Affairs Officer for The Walt Disney Company, is leaving after just 3 months on the job.
According to the article, Morrell sent his own email out to staff telling them that “after three months in this new role, it has become clear to me that for a number of reasons it is not the right fit.”
This new role included overseeing Disney’s government relations and public policy efforts which have both been quite the topic of contention for the past couple of months. The company has dealt with backlash from cast members over their lack of response at first to Florida’s so-called “Don’t Say Gay” bill and now disapproval from some members of the general public as the company has publicly opposed the bill.
Interestingly enough, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed off on a bill shortly after that will ultimately dissolve the Reedy Creek Improvement District that was formed back in 1967 which has essentially allowed Disney to act as their own government.
In case you missed the DIS Unplugged show last week, the panel had a discussion about what this could mean for Orange and Osceola County residents.
Going forward, Kristina Schake will lead global communications and report to Chapek, with government relations and public policy being led by Disney general counsel Horacio Gutierrez. Schake was just hired earlier this month and directly reported to Morrell, but in a statement, Chapek wrote, “Kristina has a strategic approach and collaborative style, as well as relentless optimism and a strong appreciation of our brand and its place in the world. These attributes will be invaluable as she works to protect and enhance our reputation.”
