Disney’s heroes and villains have some of the most iconic costuming in all of entertainment.
Whether it’s the long purple dress worn by the Evil Queen (with that fabulous CAPE) or the punk-inspired outfits in Cruella or the quirky Victorian outfit worn by Mary Poppins, Disney has created some of the most memorable costumes in history. Now, Disney is giving guests a chance to see many of those costumes up close and personal in an exhibit coming soon!
In 2019, the Walt Disney Archives opened the Heroes & Villains: The Art of the Disney Costume at the D23 Expo. Last year, Disney took the exhibit to The Seattle Museum of Pop Culture. This year, that exhibit is headed to The Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan!
The exhibit includes costumes from some of Hollywood’s most iconic costume designers, including Academy Award winners Colleen Atwood, Sandy Powell, and Tony Walton. It will feature “Cinderella’s Workshop,” a gallery featuring dresses from a variety of films based on the character, including Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella, Into the Woods, the live-action Cinderella, and the ABC series Once Upon a Time.
The gallery will feature three sections: one for heroes, one for villains, and one for characters who fall somewhere in-between. Guests will get a chance to see Belle’s village dress and ballgown from the live-action Beauty and the Beast, Giselle and Prince Edward’s costumes from Enchanted, dresses from Mary Poppins AND Mary Poppins Returns, the Sanderson Sisters’ costumes from Hocus Pocus, Maleficent’s gown from the live-action movie, and more!
The exhibit opens in Dearborn on June 25th, but if you happen to be a D23 member, you can get an early preview of the exhibit on June 23rd at a special event that will feature special guests, a tour of the exhibit, an exclusive gift, and more. Tickets for that will go on sale at the D23 website on May 3rd.
