This Mother’s Day, I want to focus on all the different types of moms, from fur moms to the women that have guided us through life. Mother’s Day is a day to celebrate anyone who has taken that motherly role, whether a stepmom, an aunt, a grandmother, a sports coach, or an older sibling. In this article, I want to showcase a few of the motherly figures within Disney that help guide and support their families.
Let’s start by honoring the moms of our favorite princesses and characters who positively impact their stories. Merida’s mom Queen Elinor is one of my favorite Disney moms because she makes such a significant transition in the film and wants to protect her kids. Next up, I want to shine a light on Princess Tiana’s mom Eudora. Throughout the movie, she wholeheartedly supports Tiana’s dreams. She also constantly reminds Tiana to find happiness while also being successful, which is a great lesson to learn. Gramma Tala the grandmother of Moana, is my favorite Disney mom. She reminds me of my grandmother, whom I miss dearly, making me cry each time I watch Moana. The best lesson she teaches is to dance to the beat of your own drum and to listen to your voice from within. Mrs. Potts is a great mother to Chip, but her motherly instincts go beyond Chip and impact Belle during her stay in the Castle. Not only did she help Chip and Belle, but she was always there for the Beast when he needed advice.
Next, I want to talk about the women that have stepped up to the plate to be a mom and the women that have become fur moms. Nani from Lilo and Stitch is an excellent example of a character that had to step into the mother role to support and care for her sister. Nani has always inspired me because it’s not easy to step in as a parent at a young age, but she did what she had to do to take care of Lilo. While brainstorming this article, I realized that Minnie Mouse is a dog mom to Pluto. Being a fur mom isn’t always easy, especially when your pet isn’t feeling well and has to go to the vet. Pocahontas, in my opinion, is a fur mom to Meeko and Flit because they are always by her side, and she protects them throughout their journey together.
I have some honorable mentions I’d like to shine a light on, like Mrs. Jumbo, Bambi’s mom, and Sarabi. The song Baby Mine from Dumbo is a tear-jerker and a beautiful moment between Dumbo and his mom. As we all know, Bambi’s mom has a tragic ending to her life, but she raised Bambi and educated him about the forest, which helped him in the long run. Not only is Sarabi the Queen of Pride Rock, but she is the mother of a fan favorite, Simba. She was there for Simba when he returned, and she helped him overthrow Scar. These moms are genuinely incredible.
I wish we could find these amazing mothers at Walt Disney World for meet and greets, even if it was only for one day. Minnie Mouse and Pluto can be found in the parks, so meeting them would be a fun way to celebrate Mother’s Day. Pocahontas can be found in Animal Kingdom with Meeko on a flotilla, so make sure to wave their way. This Mother’s Day, it’s important to honor all the women in our lives that have supported our journeys. It’s a beautiful experience to become a mom, whether to a human child or a fur baby. Make sure to hug your mom or motherly figure in your life extra tight this Mother’s Day.
