REVIEW: We Ate 🌸 Flower Petals 🌸 In Disney World And, Yes, It Was Weird

Salt & Straw is the newest ice cream shop to open in Disney Springs, and with it comes some rather…unsual flavors.

Salt & Straw in Disney Springs

We’re talking ice cream with black pepper, olive oil, and even cheese! Sure it’s a little weird, but somehow it totally WORKS. And, much like other Disney World sweet shops, you certainly won’t be bored because the menu ROTATES each month. The newest flavors to hit the menu are inspired by the spring (it is May, after all), and we stopped by to give them ALL a try!

Throughout the month of May, guests can stop by to try out Salt & Straw’s Flower Power Series of flavors. This includes Pistachio Rose Water with Strawberry Mochi, Saffron & Honey with Crystalized Flower Petals, Rhubarb Crumbles with Toasted Anise, Jasmine Milk Tea & Chocolate Almond Stracciatella, and Mathilde’s Hibiscus & Coconut Sherbert (v).

If you’re curious about them all, you can order them in separate cups (which cost $6.95 for a single scoop) or you can get a flight of four kid-sized scoops of ice cream for $14.75.

ALL the ice cream!

So, how do these new limited-edition flavors taste? Let’s dig in!

First up is the Jasmine Milk Tea & Chocolate Almond Stracciatella, which is described as a “delectably simple” jasmine tea ice cream with chocolate almond stracciatella. Um… hello…but where have you been all our life, you delicious ice cream? Just one scoop is FILLED with quality dark chocolate bits and we really enjoyed how subtle the jasmine flavor was. There’s nothing too fancy about this one, but it is sure to be a crowd-pleaser.

Jasmine Milk Tea…Ice Cream?

Then there’s the Pistachio Rose Water with Strawberry Mochi— this one is pistachio ice cream with homemade strawberry mochi and swirls of rosewater white chocolate. We didn’t enjoy this one nearly as much, as the rose water paired a bit oddly with the pistachio flavor. We thought that it gave it a bit of an alcohol taste. That being said, the mochi pieces are a good size (but they were lacking in flavor in our opinion).

Pistachio AND Rose

Next up was the Rhubarb Crumbles with Toasted Anise! It is a vanilla ice cream with ribbons of homemade rhubarb jam, loaded with toasted anise crumble. If we had to describe a dessert that most similarly compares, it would have to be pie — really, it tasted JUST like it! It was sweet but not overpowering and we just might even call it refreshing. The crumbles are a nice addition, too. This is one flavor that even kids should like!

Rhubarb!

We also tried the Saffron & Honey with Crystalized Flower Petals, which is a honey and saffron ice cream with candied cornflower petals. Now, this one left us trying to decide whether we liked it or not. It was certainly tasty, but at the same time, we felt like we were eating potpourri thanks to the grainy texture. And, if odd textures throw you off in your food, consider yourself warned — there are some pretty significant pieces of flower petals in here.

When it comes to the taste, this one has the heaviest floral flavors of them all so you might want to be a bit more of an adventurous eater if you want to give this one a try.

Honey belongs in ice cream

And, lastly is Mathilde’s Hibiscus & Coconut Sherbet. This one is a vegan coconut cream–infused sherbert with Hibiscus & Ginger Brew from Mathilde’s Kitchen. The coconut and hibiscus floral notes work really well together here and it’s got a nice, light flavor.

Compared to the others, this one had more of an icy texture (rather than creamy) and was much lighter in our stomaches — we could probably eat A LOT of it without getting too full.

Vegan ice cream

So, head on over to Salt & Straw and choose one, choose three, or choose them all — they’ll only be here through the month of May! And, be sure to stay tuned to DFB for more Disney food reviews and updates!
