Gas prices may be high but you can still take a road trip across the west coast with Salt & Straw at Disney Springs and the Downtown Disney District. The Summer Picnic Series features five new limited edition flavors this month inspired foods from California, Oregon and Washington, so join us as we give them a try! We visited the Disney Springs location, but the flavors are the same over at the Downtown Disney District in the Disneyland Resort.
A single scoop of ice cream is $6.95.
Pink Rosé and Watermelon Sorbet
Watermelon and rosé sorbet with a housemade rosé-raspberry jam. Made with Sokol Blosser Winery.
We were instantly satisfied with this perfect mix of sweet and tart flavors. The watermelon and rosè sorbet are icy, sweet, and refreshing. The raspberry jam is tart and little sour. But when we mixed the two together— it was love at first bite. Vegans and lactose-intolerant folks will love this light option.
Baked Brie & Fig Cheesecake
Whipped Brie cheesecake baked onto a candied Ritz cracker crust, dark ribbons of sweet, thick fig jam, salted sweet cream ice cream. Made with Cowgirl Creamery.
We have mixed feelings on this flavor. On one hand, it’s tasty! But on the other, it tastes nothing like brie. That might be a good thing though, because the sweet ice cream and fig jam pair together so well! There’s bits of cheesecake crust and sliced figs mixed in for a little crunch and texture. The fig jam is deliciously thick, sweet and definitely the main flavor. Overall, pretty good!
Deviled Egg Custard w/ Smoked Black Tea
Indian black salted custard ice cream with smoked tea shortbread crumble and peach balsamic marshmallow fluff. Made with Steven Smith Teamaker.
This one is an unusual but not inedible mixture of flavors. First you get the smoked black tea, then the sweet custard, and finally a hint of salt. Though the menu says marshmallow is involved, we didn’t find that flavor in the mix. This ice cream is certainly a strange one, but part of the novelty here is trying something new!
Cinnamon & Honey Fried Chicken
Spiced vanilla ice cream with bits of fried chicken croissant. Made with Ezell’s Fried Chicken.
Spiced, sweet, and creamy vanilla…. Bits of buttery, spicy fried chicken croissant…. All we can say is — yum. This vanilla was unlike anything we’ve had before and certainly a step up from the traditional flavor. With the croissant, it tasted like doughnuts. Overall, the creamy texture layered with gooey bites of fried dough was incredible and we highly recommend getting this Summer Picnic flavor!
Chocolate Nocino Cherry Pie
Rich, single-origin chocolate ice cream spike with Nocino brandy and hunks of rustic cherry slab pie. Made with Stone Barn Brandyworks.
This final flavor had all the qualities of milk chocolate covered cherries. The flavor was consistent throughout with notes of chocolate, cherry and brandy. Our only compliant is that the “rich” chocolate tasted more like milk chocolate. Moreover, the cherries were candied cherries which made it very sweet. The main flavor was brandy — it hits in the beginning and then follows through to the end. A very complete piece in our opinion.
Now that we’ve tried every single flavor, we’re going to take a much deserved nap by the pool. Feel free to share your thoughts on the ice cream below! All Summer Picnic Flavors are available through June 31st on both coasts.
