The Disney Wish is the newest addition to the Disney Cruise Line fleet, and it comes with some new and exclusive offerings!
We were invited to a media event so we could get a preview of all the new features, staterooms, and restaurants (and more) and experience the debut and christening of the Disney Wish. Right now we’re here with a review of the new animation-inspired restaurant exclusive to the ship!
Atmosphere
1923 is a family-friendly restaurant inspired by animation, and its name comes from the year the Walt Disney Company was founded. The restaurant is a celebration of the Walt Disney Company, animation, and its Californian heritage. It’s located on Deck 3.
There are two dining rooms, including the Walt Disney room and the Roy Disney room, which reflect classic Hollywood glamour AND Disney whimsy. We were seated in the Roy Disney Room.
If you take a look around, there are over 1,000 props and pieces of artwork around the restaurant, with insight into how Disney animation has evolved over the years. You might spot art from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs all the way to Frozen 2! Walls showcase all this amazing memorabilia, which is collected into themes.
Some tables also have porthole views.
And check out the sketch of the Beast looming over this table!
The overall feeling of the dining room is sophisticated and definitely gives Old Hollywood vibes with the dark wood paneling and rich colors in the flooring and upholstery.
The black, white and gold color scheme added to the glam vibes.
Shall we take a look at the menu?
Menu
The food at 1923 features California flavors, with “sophisticated dishes” designed specifically for families. You’ll find a blend of European, Asian, and South American cuisines, as well as fresh, local ingredients and Napa Valley wines!
Appetizers include dishes such as Porcini Spiced Ahi Tuna and Fennel, Bartlett Pear, and Tatsoi Salad, as well as Burrata Mozzarella Cheese & Prosciutto di Parma, and Kingswell Duck Confit Pastilla.
Soup offerings are a Pulled Guinea Hen Corn Chowder and Roasted Roma Tomato Soup, along with a bread service of Fig and Olive Bread.
Entrees included Tortiglioni Pasta, Italian Flat Parsley and Rosemary-Crusted Rack of Lamb, and a Seared Verlasso Salmon Filet.
For dessert, you can try the Churros Calientes, a Burbank Blueberry-Lemon Bavarian Cream, or a Flourless Orange Almond Cake.
Now it’s time to eat!
Eats
We tried the Burrata Mozzarella Cheese & Prosciutto di Parma appetizer.
And the Hyperion Four-Cheese Tri-Color Tortelloni.
The Tortelloni came with Meyer Lemon, Sun-Dried Tomato, and Artichoke on the side. We found this dish to be flavor-filled, but be aware that the portion-size is small, even for an appetizer. This may be a feature of the dish if you’re enjoying lots of the tastes available on the Wish!
Next, we got to try the Fennel, Bartlett Pear, and Tatsoi Salad, which also features Manchego Cheese, Walnuts, and a Sherry Dressing. The fennel was crisp and spicy, and the Manchego cheese was one of our favorite parts!
The salad is another selection that might appeal to you if you prefer to start your meal with something on the lighter side. It tasted fresh and we enjoyed the prominent pear flavor, but we felt like it would have been enjoyable if the chunks of Manchego Cheese were smaller and easier to incorporate into bites with the other salad components. We will choose a different appetizer on our next visit to 1923.
We also tasted the Pulled Guinea Hen Corn Chowder, which has yukon gold potatoes, cilantro, and smoked bacon.
This was our favorite soup we tried in the rotational dining restaurants on the Disney Wish. It was thicker than other soups we encountered on board, and the corn flavor was prominent. There were larger chunks of the Guinea Hen than we expected, and they added flavor and texture to the dish without making it too gamey.
And the bread service! You didn’t think we would forget the bread, did you?
The Fig and Olive Bread is served with a Honey Butter Dip. We expected a thinner consistency in a dip and would consider this offering a honey butter spread, but it was a nice compliment to the bread.
Moving on to entrees, we tried the Tortiglioni Pasta.
Our taster enjoyed the flavors in this meatless entree, with the tomatoes and herbs adding a fresh component.
We also had the 1923 Peppered Filet Mignon.
Fans of pepper-forward dishes will enjoy this plate. Our steak was peppered on both sides, and the pink peppercorn sauce was our favorite part of this entree. Our filet, which we ordered medium rare, was lackluster compared to the sauce and the Fingerling Potato Hash served on the side.
And the final entree we tasted was the Riverside Roasted Green Circle Chicken.
This dish was served with Brussels Sprouts, a Yukon Potato Fondant, and Honeycrisp Apple Chutney. Sauces were the stars at 1923 — we enjoyed the Cabernet Sauvignon Reduction with this dish.
For dessert, we tried the Atwater Fuji Apple Cheesecake.
This dish was an apple tart on the bottom, with an Italian-type cheesecake on the top. The presentation here was gorgeous, but the dessert was…well, fine.
We never pass up a churro if we can help it, so we got the Churros Calientes.
But, as is often the case with a churro — these were colder than we would prefer by the time they got to us. We enjoyed the creamy caramel sauce served with the churros.
Nosh or Not
Don’t miss your dinner at 1923 if…
- You’re a HUGE Disney Animation Fan — The details and atmosphere are amazing and there is so much to look at. If you love Disney films, you are going to want to eat here to stare at everything.
- You’re looking for a quiet and laid back experience
- You want an upscale dining experience — With bread service and a filet on the menu, dining here feels a bit more upscale than some of the more entertainment based experiences on the ship.
You may not LOVE 1923 if…
- You’re looking for something more outside of the box — While there is a wide range of foods to try here, the menu focuses mostly on steak, pasta, salads, and soups. If you are craving something more adventurous, you may want to dine elsewhere.
- You are looking for something to keep the family entertained — As we said above, this is a more laid back and quiet experience on the Wish. If you are dining with small kiddos or are just looking for entertainment and a higher energy level, another dining option might be a better bet.
Overall
This is a gorgeous restaurant. Disney fans will truly enjoy the memorabilia and overall atmosphere at 1923. Diners will find something for everyone — from a pasta dish to steak to rack of lamb.
