Disney+ Day 2022 Could Bring BIG Announcements — Here’s What to Expect

If you don’t already have your calendar marked for September 8th, get it out and mark down that date RIGHT NOW.

Disney+ Day Decor

Why? September 8th, 2022 is when Disney+ Day falls this year. Basically, it’s a day to celebrate the Disney+ streaming service. In 2021, Disney+ Day was FULL of special discounts, Disney+ announcements, unique character meet-and-greets, and SO much more. So what can you expect from this year’s festivities? We’re breaking it all down for you here.

When Is Disney+ Day in 2022?

In 2022, Disney+ Day falls on September 8th, the day before the start of the D23 Expo.

What Happened Last Year?

In 2021, Disney+ Day took place in November. Here’s what those celebrations included.

Disney+ Releases

Disney+ Day 2021 brought with it some special Disney+ releases — including the release of the reboot of Home Alone, Home Sweet Alone.

In 2021, Disney+ Day also marked the release of Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings for free on Disney+, the release of the live-action Jungle Cruise movie on Disney+ for free, the debut of the Olaf Presents shorts, the release of a special Simpsons short, and MUCH more.

Before the celebration, we even got a video preview of what was to come.

On Disney+ Day 2021, Disney+ subscribers were also able to start streaming some movies in IMAX’s Expanded Aspect Ratio.

Announcements

In addition to Disney+ releases, we also got tons of announcements and reveals that day. For the Star Wars fans, Disney shared a sneak peek at the Obi-Wan Kenobi series (which had not yet debuted at that point).

We also got tons of Marvel announcements. Those announcements included a first look at the Moon Knight series, a first look at the She-Hulk series, a first look at Ms. Marvel, news about What If…? Season 2, and much more. Sometimes they were brand new announcements, while other times they were just a first look or more details about Marvel projects we had already heard about.

Ms. Marvel recently premiered on Disney+

There were some special first looks released on the Disney+ website/app. And Disney also shared LOTS of announcements and first looks or behind-the-scenes peeks via Twitter or other social media accounts for upcoming Disney+ projects.

We got a trailer for the Baymax! series, some words from Amy Adams and Patrick Dempsey about Disenchanted, a clip for The Beatles Get Back, and soooo much more.

In celebration of Disney+ Day, there were also spots on Disney-owned networks throughout the week with stars talking about what they’re streaming on Disney+ and other Disney+ mentions.

In the Parks

Things went to the next level in the Disney parks for Disney+ Day 2021. The celebration brought out what was then termed the “blue carpet experience.”

There were free PhotoPass downloads offered at select spots for Disney+ subscribers, special PhotoPass opportunities (magic shots and props), and all kinds of banners, decorations, decals on the floors, and flags over in Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

There was even a special message from a certain Mandalorian when we scanned into Hollywood Studios for the day!

On top of that, there were free hats and buttons offered, Disney lit up some of the park icons in blue

…and some unique characters popped up in Hollywood Studios and Disneyland.

But wait, there’s MORE! For Disney+ Day, Disney+ subscribers also got 30 minutes early entry to Disney World and Disneyland (which amounted to an extra 60 minutes in the parks if stacked with the Early Theme Park Entry offered to Disney World Hotel guests).

At Home

Couldn’t make it to the parks last year? Disney had you covered with fun stuff at home too! In 2021, Disney offered a new AR filter with Baby Yoda for free on the My Disney Experience app, free shipping on shopDisney for Disney+ subscribers, new customizable items online from Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars, discounted eBooks from Disney Publishing Worldwide, and NFTs of Disney characters on VeVe.

Funko also offered discounts online and in stores, and so did WizKids.

Could a Free Shipping Code Come Again This Year?

And as the icing on top of the cake, Disney offered a discount on Disney+. Specifically, the cost of a new subscription was dropped to $1.99 for 1 month (with the price then set to increase to the “normal” price after that 1-month deal).

Beyond

In addition to the other offerings and deals, some Target locations had special in-store Disney+ activations along with Disney+ day offers and special giveaways.

And at AMC theaters there were surprise movie screenings with a surprise short, all offered for prices starting at $5. These came with a concession offer and a free poster.

WHEW. That was a LOT of celebrating. So what is coming in 2022?

What Has Been Confirmed for 2022?

Disney has not yet confirmed much for Disney+ Day 2022, but they have said some special surprises are on the way!

Here’s what we know so far.

Disney+ Releases

Thus far, Disney has confirmed that the new live-action Pinocchio film starring Tom Hanks will be released on Disney+ Day.

On Disney+ Day, the new Cars series — Cars on the Road — is also set to be released on Disney+. The series follows Lightning McQueen and Mater as they go on a road trip to go visit Mater’s sister. Like any road trip across the country, their adventure will come with its own set of unexpected twists and hilarious surprises!

In addition to those series, Epic Adventures with Bertie Gregory from National Geographic will be available on Disney+ starting September 8th.

Growing Up will also be coming out on Disney+ on September 8th. This docuseries features 10 stories all about the courage to be yourself. The series is executive produced by Brie Larson.

Tierra Incógnita, a mystery/horror series from Disney+ Latino America, is set to be released on September 8th as well. Be sure to check and see whether this is available in your country.

Additionally, Variety reports that Wedding Season, the first U.K. original series from Disney+ will debut on September 8th. It’s a romantic comedy action thriller that’ll stream on Disney+ globally, Star+ in Latin America, and Hulu in the U.S.

The series follows Katie and Stefan. The pair fall for each other at a wedding and start to have an affair (Katie is already engaged). Two months later, while at Katie’s wedding, her new husband and his family are killed. The police are suspicious of Stefan, while Stefan thinks Katie is behind it all. Who is truly to blame? You’ll have to watch to find out!

In the United Kingdom, Disney+ Day will bring with it the premiere of Mike, an original series all about Mike Tyson.

What Else Could Await Us?

While that’s all that has been released about Disney+ Day so far, there could be so much more in store for us, based largely on what we saw last year.

Disney+ Releases & Announcements

Disney+ Day could bring us more Disney+ releases or news about upcoming releases. Maybe we’ll learn about when Thor: Love and Thunder could come to Disney+? Or perhaps we’ll get to learn about when Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi will stream on Disney+?

We could get news or the release of new Simpsons shorts. Could we also hear about the Guardians of the Galaxy holiday special? Maybe we’ll get an Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2 confirmation, the trailer for the next season of The Mandalorian, news about a season 2 for Boba Fett, a trailer for the new Ahsoka series, or even Bad Batch season 2 information?

The Mandalorian Experience at the 2022 Star Wars Celebration

What about Hocus Pocus 2 news? Maybe Disney+ Day will finally bring us a full trailer for Disenchanted? Or could we get more details about the Night at the Museum animated movie? There are a LOT of possibilities here.

We could also get news about other Disney+ series/movies we heard about back during the 2020 Investor Day but haven’t heard about since — like Sister Act 3 or Zootopia+.

Heart eyes

Disney has done some live streams on Disney+ recently, like the Harmonious special, so it’s possible that another live stream could be announced or offered on Disney+ Day. We could also get surprise announcements for other/new Disney+ projects.

In the Parks

In the Disney parks, we could get celebrations similar to what we saw last year with decorations, banners, free stuff, unique character meet-and-greets, and photo ops.

PhotoPass sign

We could also see the return of special perks for Disney+ subscribers in the parks, like extra early entry or free PhotoPass downloads.

At Home

Disney+ Day could once again bring with it a discount on Disney+ for a limited time and/or perhaps more news about Disney+’s upcoming ad-supported tier.

Beyond

In addition to the above, Disney could offer special discounts for Disney+ subscribers or perks like free shipping online. Discounts could also be offered at stores like Target or other retailers that sell Disney merchandise.

What makes this Disney+ Day extra special is that it takes place the day before the D23 Expo starts, so Disney could also release hints about what’s to come during the Expo or special perks/experiences that Disney+ subscribers may be able to unlock at the Expo.

D23 Expo Poster

But, its closeness to the Expo also presents a bit of a problem. Because D23 Expo will be coming soon after Disney+ Day and the Expo is set to be FULL of big panels with huge news about Disney movies and series, Disney+ Day might go a bit “lighter” on the exciting announcements, choosing to save the big stuff for the Expo instead.

Still, we’re excited to see what Disney+ Day will hold in 2022. Thus far, not much has been confirmed, but if last year is any indication, there could be quite a lot in store. We’ll check for more updates and let you know what we find.
