2022 has seen the departure of many fantastically talented individuals from this world, and now, sadly, another has joined the list.
If you’re a huge fan of Sonny Eclipse, the astro organ-playing alien located in Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Cafe, we have some sad news.
Sonny Eclipse began enchanting fans in Cosmic Ray’s since 1995. He is voiced by the late Kal David. On August 16th, 2022, Kal David’s wife, Lauri Bono, posted on Facebook to share the news of David’s passing.
According to Bono’s post, David passed away on the morning of August 16th with “clarity and peacefulness in his heart.” Bono shared, “He wanted you all to know that he loved you and thanked you all for loving him. His music will live on as a testament to his incredible talent.”
Bono continued by saying “He was a sweet, humble, wonderful man and the love of my life for 45 years…I will find my way into the future because that is what he asked of me…Please forgive me if I can’t return all the calls and messages I am receiving..I’ll do my best over time..I’m sending love and comfort to all of you.”
We are truly saddened to hear about this loss and send our deepest condolences to Bono and David’s entire family. It seems the universe has gained a true space angel and we’re sure that there’s a bright little star up in the sky shining extra brilliantly now. We’ll listen to Sonny Eclipse’s set with a whole other level of appreciation and admiration.
If you’re unfamiliar with Sonny Eclipse, he is an animatronic voiced by David, as we mentioned above. You can find him in the center room of Cosmic Ray’s restaurant, which is a quick-service spot located in Magic Kingdom’s Tomorrowland in Walt Disney World.
If you’ve never checked out this space alien, he’s absolutely worth a visit. The set features some hilarious puns and dad-style jokes, along with some fantastic music and (of course) wonderful singing. He sings about everything from the fries at the restaurant to the space angels who help him put on the show.
Next time you’re in the park, grab some fries and take a listen!
Just be aware that Sonny can sometimes disappear for refurbishment or due to parties and special events.
You can also visit Kal David’s official website to hear more of his music and learn all about his work performing as a blues guitarist and singer.
We’ll continue to look for more Disney news and we’ll let you know what we find.
