PHOTOS: Minimal Flooding and Damage at Walt Disney World Resort Hotels Amidst Hurricane Ian

Tropical Storm Ian is still making its way across Florida. Walt Disney World Resort hotels have seen some flooding and damage, though seem relatively fine.

At Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, we saw a tree down in the savanna, but no other damage. Animals were taken indoors for safety.

Hotel guests were asked to shelter in their rooms at 9:00 p.m. last night.

There was some leaking in this low area of the lobby, but no flooding.

WESH 2 shared a video of the flooded road just outside the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin hotels.

Two exterior panels of Disney’s Contemporary Resort fell off, as shown in this tweet from Grain & Spirit. A panel was sitting on a guest room balcony.

Timothy Malone shared photos from Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort. Some shingles were blown off the roof of the wedding chapel and the roof of one of the hotel buildings.

Instagram user tigervillec shared a video of a large exit sign that had been blown over on Walt Disney World Resort property, partially blocking World Drive.

They also shared footage of the entrance to Magic Kingdom parking, where green lights remain on and no damage is visible.

Twitter user Nick Mantegani shared a photo of a tree down at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort, between the Cabanas and Ranchos buildings. The tree doesn’t appear to have hit any buildings.

While things seem relatively fine at Walt Disney World Resort, we don’t yet know if there is any damage inside the parks. Other areas in central Florida saw more severe flooding, and Universal Orlando Resort has seen some damage.

Most of Walt Disney World Resort remains closed today, September 29, 2022.

NEWS: Hurricane Ian Downgraded to Tropical Storm in Florida

Hurricane Ian made landfall in Florida yesterday as a Category 4 storm. It first landed in Cayo Costa, Florida, with winds of 150 mph. Since then, flood, tornado, and hurricane warnings have been issued throughout the state, with much of the damage happening in Central Florida.

©Wesh 2

Although officials continue to warn residents to remain inside their shelters and be on alert, it looks like the storm has weakened as it progresses through Florida.

The National Hurricane Center has downgraded the hurricane to a tropical storm. They reported that “coastal water levels continue to subside along the west coast of Florida,” although “there is a danger of life-threatening storm surge through Friday along the coast of northeast Florida.”

©NOAA

The main difference between a hurricane and a tropical storm is the sustained wind speed of the storm. Currently, Tropical Storm Ian has sustained winds at 65 mph.

Florida residents can still expect tropical storm-force winds and possible catastrophic flooding. According to CNBC, over 2.5 million Florida residents have lost power due to the storm. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said that this storm would be “one of the top 5 hurricanes to ever hit the Florida peninsula.”

©NOAA

In response to the destruction, President Joe Biden has declared a major disaster. This means that federal aid will be deployed to help local and state officials in recovery efforts.

©AP

Tropical Storm Ian was expected to weaken as it passed over land, but experts warn that it could reach hurricane strength again when it passes over Florida’s east coast on September 29th.
