REVIEW: Paradise Garden Grill at Festival of Holidays at Disneyland Resort

It’s time for the Festival of Holidays in Disney California Adventure, which means we’ve been eating our way around all the food booths!

We’ve already tried a chocolate bourbon tart, some curry mac ‘n cheese, and (one of our favorites) a chorizo queso fundido. Now, we’re ready to move on to the next eats. Come with us to Paradise Garden Grill to check out the festival offerings at this restaurant!

Although Paradise Garden Grill is a permanent dining location, it gets a few specialty menu items for the Festival of Holidays.

This year, there are a LOT of new items on the menu here — let’s take a look!

Menu

On the menu this year, you’ll find some Impossible Albondigas Soup, a Chicken Tinga Burrito, a Pozole Dip Torta, some Loaded Yucca Fries, and a Chicken Tinga Arepa.

There’s also a new dessert — the Mango Tres Leches!

And you can’t forget about the Watermelon Candy Cocktail, which is returning from years past.

Eats

We’ll start with the Impossible Albondigas Soup. This plant-based option is made with Impossible meatballs in a vegetable soup for $12.49.

We really enjoyed this! The meatballs tasted just like pork, and we couldn’t tell at all that they weren’t real meat. They were very tender and juicy, and you get a decent portion for the price. There were 3 large meatballs in the bowl. The soup was a pretty classic veggie soup.

Up next was the Loaded Yucca Fries, which are topped with arbol chile cheese sauce, carne asada, guacamole, sour cream, and pickled red onion for $12.49.

These were one of our favorite things here! The fries had a thin, crispy exterior with a super fluffy interior. The fresh ingredients on top complemented them well, and we thought it was the perfect snack.

The Pozole Dip Torta is next. This is a pozole-braised pork torta with hominy spread, cabbage, radish, cilantro, and jalapeño served with a side of pozole consommé for $12.99.

Unfortunately, this one was very disappointing. The pozole was greasy and heavy, and it left an oily taste in our mouths. However, the torta was clearly made with high-quality ingredients, and everything else tasted fresh! If you can get past the heaviness of the pozole, the dish comes together pretty well with all the toppings.

On to the Chicken Tinga Arepa, which is a handmade arepa topped with refried beans, chicken Tinga, cabbage, avocado, and queso fresco. You can get it for $7.99.

We thought the arepa might have been a little bit undercooked, but the chicken was soft and had a great flavor. The queso fresco and avocado were great additions and made everything taste more fresh.

The Chicken Tinga Burrito is made with chicken Tinga, rice, and beans in a flour tortilla served with corn tortilla chips for $12.99.

This one was sadly not as successful as the arepa. Although the chicken inside was soft and a little bit spicy, it got lost in all the other fillings (there was a LOT of rice and beans inside). Overall we thought it was just too bland.

And we ended with dessert! The Mango Tres Leches is a tres leches parfait with white cake and mango purée topped with caramel Chantilly, green whipped topping, and sprinkles. It costs $6.49.

We really enjoyed this treat! The build of the tres leches was nearly perfect, with the soft cake soaking up all the milks. The jammy mango chunks were all at the bottom.

The frosting on top strayed from a traditional tres leches, but we liked that it added some sweetness because we thought that the cake itself needed a little more sugar.

Drinks

The Watermelon Candy Cocktail is made with tequila, watermelon schnapps, and pineapple juice with a Chamoy and chile-lime seasoned rim for $17.

We loved this drink…until the ice started to melt. At first it was beautifully sweet and tasted like fresh watermelon juice with a bit of a tang from that tajin-coated rim. But it was light on the alcohol, and once the ice was melting it almost tasted like an overpriced agua fresca. We wished there were an option to get it at a cheaper price without the alcohol, because we didn’t think the tequila added much to this drink.

Overall

In general, there were some big wins and some major misses at this booth! Those yucca fries were one of our favorite things we’ve eaten so far, and we also enjoyed the tres leches a lot. However, we probably won’t be getting the chicken burrito or pozole dip torta again in the future.
