Are you ready for an exciting story?
Now, we’ve heard (and shared) some pretty wild stories. There are plenty of creepy tales from Animal Kingdom and Magic Kingdom. But what if we told you this story is about a long-lost Mickey statue…with lobster hands.
We knew there was no way you could click away because this story is as wild as it sounds. But first, we need some backstory. According to ABC News, to celebrate cartoon Mickey’s 75th Anniversary in 2004, Disney commissioned 75 unique statues. One of these statues was “Lobsta Mickey” — a 6-foot-tall Mickey statue with lobster claws for hands.
The 700-pound statue was last seen entertaining guests at Quincy Market in Boston, Massachusetts, when it disappeared. Yes, literally. After being sold at an auction in 2005, the statue completely slipped off the radar and hasn’t been seen since…until NOW.
Deon Point, who is the director of the Boston sneaker store Concepts, was determined to track down the statue. After 5 years of searching, he did just that.
Point finally saw an eBay listing for the statue in New Jersey, although the statue was worn down after all the years. Point hired a local artist to touch up the statue and is currently displaying it on Concepts’ Newbury Street showroom floor. After the holidays, Point will find a long-term home for the statue somewhere in Boston.
So there you have it — the wild story of how a Lobster Mickey statue was created, then lost for 17 years before being found once again. Stay tuned to DFB for more Disney news!
