“Avatar: The Way of Water” has officially made $1 billion at the global box office. It is the fastest a movie has achieved this goal in 2022, hitting $1 billion in 14 days.
“Avatar: The Way of Water” earned $53 million on its opening day. It fell below opening weekend projections, hitting $135 million domestically. It has now made $317.1 million in North America and $712.7 million overseas, for a total of $1.025 billion.
The only other 2022 films that have reached $1 billion are “Top Gun: Maverick” (in 31 days) and “Jurassic World Dominion” (in four months). In 2021, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” reached $1 billion in just 12 days. Nine movies total reached $1 billion in 2019, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Only six movies in history have reached $1 billion in their first two weeks.
“Avatar: The Way of Water” has the sixth-best domestic debut in December behind “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and four “Star Wars” films. It is now the second-highest-grossing film of the year, behind “Top Gun: Maverick.”
