With Christmas being just days away, holiday travel is reaching peak levels. There have been lots of flight delays and cancelations, and experts have predicted record-breaking crowds. Now, President Biden has issued a warning for those traveling over the holidays.

On Thursday, December 22, President Joe Biden issued a warning urging Americans to travel early for the holidays. Earlier this week, it was predicted that 112.7 Million people would be traveling around the United States this holiday season. Now, with the massive storms making their way throughout the country, travel has been impacted even more.

The National Weather Service issued a statement on its website that warned of a “widespread and dangerous arctic blast” in parts of America. The service also stated that this blast will be a “life-threatening cold” as it spreads throughout the country.

Due to the severe conditions, President Biden urged Americans to travel early if possible and to “please heed local warnings.” According to the National Weather Service, a significant part of the contiguous US states is expected to be impacted by these storms.

Florida is anticipating very cold weather on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, with “dangerously low temperatures” affecting much of the state. The cold front is expected to arrive on Friday, December 23rd, bringing below-zero lows during the holidays. The Panhandle and North Florida are expected to get the worst of the weather, but Central Florida will also get bitter temperatures (Wesh 2).

More than 2,800 flights have already been canceled since Wednesday, December 21st, and several popular airlines have issued weather waivers. American, Southwest, United, Delta, Spirit, JetBlue, Alaska, and other airlines are warning that more flights will be canceled or delayed, and many airlines are allowing travelers to adjust plans without change fees.

If you’re traveling soon, make sure you keep an eye on your flight status and get in contact with the airline soon if you want or need to change plans. You may be able to adjust without any fees!

The Orlando Airport shared a few tips for minimizing travel disruptions if you’re heading to Disney World soon. They suggested arriving at the airport at least 3 hours early, making reservations ahead of time to go through Orlando airport security without waiting in line (click this link to reserve a time), downloading airport and airline apps to get up-to-date info faster, and prepare for long lines at security and gates.
