“Encanto” was the top-streamed movie in 2022, according to the new charts released by Nielsen.
It’s not surprising considering the film’s instant success when it was released in late 2021. It reached 27.416 billion minutes viewed, over double the 11.427 billion minutes viewed of “Turning Red,” which is second place in Nielsen’s top 15. Other Disney+ films on the list are “Moana,” “Hocus Pocus 2,” “Frozen,” “Luca,” “Zootopia,” “Coco,” “Eternals,” and “Frozen II.”
The only non-Disney+ films on the list are “Sing 2” (third place), “The Adam Project,” “Don’t Look Up,” “The Gray Man,” and “Uncharted,” all streaming on Netflix.
“Encanto” is number five of the top 15 streaming programs overall, which includes TV shows. That list is topped by Netflix’s “Stranger Things.” “Bluey” and “The Simpsons,” which both stream on Disney+, are number eight and 15 on the list respectively.
There are no Disney+ shows or films on the list of the top 15 original streaming programs. Eligible programs would have include “Star Wars” originals like “The Mandalorian,” “Andor,” and “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” as well as Marvel originals (“WandaVision” was the 14th most streamed TV show in 2021). “Turning Red” would have also qualified as an original since it premiered on Disney+.
“Bluey” and “The Simpsons” also appear on the list of top 15 acquired streaming programs, as numbers five and 10 respectively.
