RUMOR: Nighttime Drone Show Coming to Universal Studios Florida

A new nighttime drone show may be coming soon to Universal Studios Florida.

Sources have revealed that testing has begun for a new nighttime show at the park utilizing drones to create images in the sky. This technology has been used before by both Disney and Universal, but sparingly.

It’s unclear if the show will be simply added to the lineup, replacing Cinematic Celebration, or used for a special event. No official word has come at this time, and Universal Creative often develops or tests ideas that never come to fruition.

Drones would provide a solution for Universal’s nighttime show problem. Because Universal Orlando Resort is in the city proper and surrounded by residential neighborhoods (including an apartment complex directly backed up to the property), their shows feature little to no pyrotechnics. Drones could be substituted to create the “impressive” element that many guests have complained is missing from the lagoon shows.

This is a developing rumor; stay tuned for further updates.

First Look at TRON Lightcycle Run Cast Members in Costume at Magic Kingdom

TRON Lightcycle / Run Cast Members have received their uniforms and are starting to show up to work at the attraction in Magic Kingdom. We saw one such Cast Member at the walkway entrance during our recent Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover trip.

The Cast Member was standing sentinel behind the sign for TRON Lightcycle / Run.

The costume is black, with a shiny teal panel down the front of the shirt and white lines running down the shirt and pants. The ensemble resembles the costumes worn by characters in “TRON” and “TRON: Legacy,” but are less form-fitting.

The TRON Lightcycle / Run Cast Member costume was first revealed at the D23 Expo in 2019. It is the same costume that Cast Members wear at TRON Lightcycle Power Run in Shanghai Disneyland.

The coaster will finally open at Magic Kingdom in April and will utilize a virtual queue and Lightning Lane. Recently, Disney shared photos of the curved canopy fully powered on for the first time.

Joachim Rønning will reportedly direct a third TRON film, “Tron: Ares,” starring Jared Leto.

Trail’s End Restaurant, We Will Miss You.

Friday evening, we received some sad Disney food news; Trail’s End Restaurant at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Campground is closing this spring. When it reopens later this year, it will have a “marketplace concept with expanded quick service options,” but table service will no longer be available. My heart broke immediately when I heard the news.

Here’s a little back story. I wouldn’t say I like camping, but my dad loves it and got on a camping kick when I was a freshman in high school in 2011. He persuaded me to join the rest of my family on a camping trip because it would be at Disney World. I was not excited about this trip at all, but the best memory and tradition that came out of this trip was Trail’s End Restaurant. It was affordable for my family, the buffet had something for everyone, and it stole my heart.

Eventually, he stopped bringing the family to camp at Disney, and they ventured to places all over the country. I didn’t join because again camping is not my friend. That didn’t stop me from coming back here, though. I ended up planning my 22nd birthday in 2018, and guess where I picked to eat with all my friends. Trail’s End. I had a blast that day.

Many fans would’ve picked somewhere else for a birthday breakfast at Disney, but we were college kids that couldn’t afford fancy meals, so this was the next best thing. All of my friends were able to enjoy my birthday without breaking the bank. The best part is that after eating, we hopped on a boat and made our way to the Magic Kingdom.

I am not the only one feeling sad over this change. Over on the DISboards, many fans are expressing their feelings on the subject.

Simba’s Mom

This user asked a great question, “Is there really enough demand for another quick service?” When I stayed here a few times, going to Trail’s End after a long park day was the best. P&J’s is a takeout restaurant attached to the table service location. We only ordered from here if we needed to eat in the camper or were in a rush, which wasn’t very often. Hopefully, the new dining experience will be just as good. If you are sad about this closure, I highly recommend checking out the DISboards thread. It helped me feel less alone and offered different perspectives on this sad news.

The store is the Space Mountain gift shop but is being refurbished to also be the TRON Lightcycle / Run gift shop. It has been closed since August, with the exit of Space Mountain re-routed.

“Light & Power Co.” remains visible.

As the name suggests, the rough theme of Tomorrowland Light & Power Co. was that of a power company in the city of Tomorrowland.

Here is a photo from October, showing “Tomorrowland” above the lefthand doors, as well as the gear clock, electrical tower mural, and sign reading “Generating a Bright New Tomorrow,” which were all removed in December.

Disney has not announced a reopening date for Tomorrowland Light & Power Co., but TRON Lightcycle / Run will open on April 4.
