A new year has brought new flavors to Award Wieners at Disney California Adventure in the Cubano Dog and Blueberry-Maple Bacon Funnel Cake Fries. There’s a feast of savory and sweet to try, so let’s dig in!
Cubano Dog – $15.49
Mojo Pork, Ham Cubano-style Sandwich with Pepperjack, Pickle and Mojo Mustard on a Toasted Telera Bread with choice of Cuties Mandarin Oranges or Filmstrip Fries
This is a fantastic sandwich! The hearty hot dog is split lengthwise and makes up the bottom of the dish, layered thick with ham and mojo pork, pickles, mustard and cheese. Whereas many of the other offerings at Award Wieners are served on a hot dog-like roll, the Cubano Dog is served on a flat bun, more similar to a sandwich.
It’s got a lot going on. It’s heavy and juicy, but it’s hard to pick out individual flavors. The only thing that really jumps out is the hot dog, which is covered in a myriad of toppings. Notes of vinegar from the pickles or the mustard come out occasionally or the velvety richness of the mojo pork and the melty cheese, but nothing ever rears its head for too long.
This is a very cohesive sandwich that hangs together as one uniform dish, rather than individual flavors all working together.
Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed the Cubano Dog and it is, of course, served with the best fries in Disneyland – Filmstrip Fries – which just makes the whole experience even better.
Blueberry-Maple Bacon Funnel Cake Fries – $9.49
Sugar and Bacon-coated Funnel Fries drizzled with Maple Syrup and topped with Whipped Topping, Bacon and Blueberry Compote
This is heavy on the maple, light on the blueberry. Even when eating the blueberry compote on its own, the flavor is very delicate. And when eating it on the funnel fries, it becomes nearly undetectable.
The main flavor note of this dish is maple, which when added to the fried dough, brings back memories of the French toast sticks that fast food restaurants would offer for breakfast. They are heavily fried, nice and crispy, and when paired with the maple flavors throughout, it brings back lots of memories of special Saturday morning breakfasts at Burger King. Seeing as the maple is so heavy-handed in this treat and the blueberry so understated, it kind of does become a one-note song. It’s a sweet, nostalgic note but there’s not much to distract from the maple and fried dough. There’s very little complexity here.
It’s not bad, and it’s nice to relieve some memories, but several other specialty funnel cake fries have had more going on with more complex flavors and ingredients competing for the diner’s attention. This one feels like it falls a little flat by comparison to dishes of festivals gone by. Overall, we enjoyed it, but it’s not our favorite funnel cake fries we’ve ever had from Award Wieners.
