Friday evening, we received some sad Disney food news; Trail’s End Restaurant at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Campground is closing this spring. When it reopens later this year, it will have a “marketplace concept with expanded quick service options,” but table service will no longer be available. My heart broke immediately when I heard the news.
Here’s a little back story. I wouldn’t say I like camping, but my dad loves it and got on a camping kick when I was a freshman in high school in 2011. He persuaded me to join the rest of my family on a camping trip because it would be at Disney World. I was not excited about this trip at all, but the best memory and tradition that came out of this trip was Trail’s End Restaurant. It was affordable for my family, the buffet had something for everyone, and it stole my heart.
Eventually, he stopped bringing the family to camp at Disney, and they ventured to places all over the country. I didn’t join because again camping is not my friend. That didn’t stop me from coming back here, though. I ended up planning my 22nd birthday in 2018, and guess where I picked to eat with all my friends. Trail’s End. I had a blast that day.
Many fans would’ve picked somewhere else for a birthday breakfast at Disney, but we were college kids that couldn’t afford fancy meals, so this was the next best thing. All of my friends were able to enjoy my birthday without breaking the bank. The best part is that after eating, we hopped on a boat and made our way to the Magic Kingdom.
I am not the only one feeling sad over this change. Over on the DISboards, many fans are expressing their feelings on the subject.
This user asked a great question, “Is there really enough demand for another quick service?” When I stayed here a few times, going to Trail’s End after a long park day was the best. P&J’s is a takeout restaurant attached to the table service location. We only ordered from here if we needed to eat in the camper or were in a rush, which wasn’t very often. Hopefully, the new dining experience will be just as good. If you are sad about this closure, I highly recommend checking out the DISboards thread. It helped me feel less alone and offered different perspectives on this sad news.
