After a trilogy of animated movies, Hiccup and Toothless will return for an adventure unlike any other. Universal and DreamWorks Animation have announced the first live-action movie adaptation of “How to Train Your Dragon” is in the works and fans of the franchise can expect it to be released in theaters on March 14, 2025.
Dean DeBlois co-wrote and directed the three animated films and will return to write, direct, and produce the franchise’s first live-action adaptation. The animated trilogy earned three Academy Award nominations and a Golden Globe, amassing more than $1.6 billion in revenue combined, so expectations are certainly high as DeBlois takes on his first live-action movie project.
The “How to Train Your Dragon” franchise is based on the book series by Cressida Cowell. Universal DreamWorks introduced fans to Hiccup, an aspiring Viking dragon hunter, and his unlikely dragon pal Toothless in the first animated film released in 2010. Since then, two more animated sequels and a number of shorts, shows, and video games have kept the love alive for all of the adorable creatures in the franchise.
