The 50th Annual Annie Awards – Winners from The Walt Disney Company

Last night was the 50th Annie Awards, the annual awards ceremony honoring individuals who have made significant contributions to the art of animation. It was a big night for Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio and a somewhat light year for Disney wins, with just 5. Here, we will showcase winners from all arms of The Walt Disney […]

“Not-Your-Cheese Pump” Guests Again Damage Concession Stand in Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway at Disneyland

The fake concessions stand in the Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway queue at Disneyland Park has been damaged again. A pepper shaker was missing but later re-affixed to the condiments counter just days after the ride opened.

The new damage is also on the condiments counter, this time on the nacho cheese dispenser.

The pump at the top of the dispenser has been broken off by a guest. These props are very much in reach of guests, so it is to be expected that they will be touched.

The concessions stand is full of Easter eggs and puns — like “nacho cheese” and “your cheese.” Take our full photo and video tour of the Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway queue and ride.

Marvel’s Newest Movie Made HISTORY…But Not in a Good Way

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania just had its second week at the box office.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania at AMC Theatre in Disney Springs

The film brings back the Avenger for an adventure that has introduced a new villain to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, Ant-Man still isn’t a match for the box office, and it has suffered a dramatic drop during its second week.

Even a fancy popcorn bucket couldn’t get Marvel fans into the theaters for this movie after its premiere. The film is still in first place at the box office after its $106 million opening week. However, according to Variety, it only made $32.2 million in its second week, which is a decrease of 69%!

©Marvel

This now means that Quantumania now has the biggest week-to-week drop in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, beating out Black Widow and Eternals, who previously held that record. However, Ant-Man 3 has still brought in $346 million globally.

©Marvel

By comparison, Universal’s comedy Cocaine Bear (no, we did NOT make that up) is in a close second place this week at the box office — it took in $23 million in its opening weekend. Bad reviews could be responsible for Ant-Man’s drastic drop, but all we’re saying is that this is the first Ant-Man movie that did not have Michael Peña return as Luis… .

©Marvel

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania has set up the next phase of the MCU, as well as introduced Marvel’s next big villain Kang, who is greeting guests as a character at Disney California Adventure’s Avengers Campus. There is also a post-credits scene that offers a teaser about the second season of a certain Marvel show on Disney+.

©Marvel

We’ll continue to keep an eye on how Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is doing at the box office and keep you updated on all of Disney’s new Marvel projects, including its shows on Disney+. So stay tuned to DFB for more!

In the meantime, here’s everything coming to Disney+ in March.

Post-Show Experience Sponsored by Enterprise Coming to TRON Lightcycle Run at Magic Kingdom

A post-show experience sponsored by Enterprise Rent-A-Car will open at the exit of TRON Lightcycle / Run in Magic Kingdom.

Tron Lightcycle run exit area C

We noticed an area blocked off by black curtains when we rode TRON Lightcycle / Run during Cast Member previews and now know this is where the experience will be held.

There is no shop space at the attraction, instead TRON merchandise will be sold at the Tomorrowland Light & Power Co. that is currently closed for remodeling.

There will be previews of TRON Lightcycle / Run for Annual Passholders, Disney Vacation Club members, and D23 Gold members over the next several weeks, but we don’t know when the post-show experience will open. The attraction will open to all guests on April 4, 2023. Tomorrowland Light & Power Co. will also reopen soon to act as the gift shop for TRON Lightcycle / Run and Space Mountain.

Enterprise Rent-A-Car sponsors the new roller-coaster, as well as Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover.

REVIEW: Is Trader Sam’s Tiki Bar Worth the WAIT?

Trader Sam’s Enchanted Tiki Bar at Disneyland Hotel is one of our team’s favorite places to find fun drinks, incredible theming, and witty bartenders.

Trader Sam’s Mug

But we’re not the only ones making sure to stop by on our Disneyland visits — this spot is known for having long lines to get in even before it opens. We made sure to get a spot on our most recent trip, so follow along to see how it went!

We’ve been to this location on multiple occasions and really loved it in the past. We’ve gone when they first opened, when they released new drinks, and after it reopened following the COVID closures. This time around, we sat at the bar and ordered a few drinks and bites to eat. Let’s see how it went.

Atmosphere

The atmosphere is one of the best parts of this location, which was inspired by the world-famous Jungle Cruise. When you walk up, you’ll notice the entrance by the large rum barrel noting the name of the lounge.

Trader Sam’s Enchanted Tiki Bar

According to Disney, the story is that years ago, explorer Trader Sam was “bitten by the bartending bug” and ever since, he has been searching the “Amazon, Congo, Mystic Point, Polynesia, and every exotic locale in-between for ingredients to mix into these magical libations.”

Trader Sam’s Christmas Decorations

The atmosphere matches this storyline perfectly, and you could stay entertained the whole time just taking in all the decor. You’ll find photographs and souvenirs, and if you look closely, puns, historical facts, and plenty of Disney references. We had a seat at the bar, and its vibe did not disappoint.

Trader Sam’s Bar

We were given themed menus that introduced us to the backstory of the bar…

Trader Sam’s

…and showed us some of their bites to eat.

Trader Sam’s menu

Let’s take a look!

Eats

While you could stay entertained the whole time just taking in the sights, we love how unique the cocktails are here, so we decided to try two — the Hala Kahiki and the Zambezi Sour.

Trader Sam’s cocktail menu

The Hala Kahiki is made with Plantation Pineapple Rum, fresh lemon juice, honey syrup, Falernum, and Peychaud’s Bitters. It was fun, but pretty basic compared to some of the other drinks offered here. The main flavors were the fruit juice and the Falernum — a sweetened lime and spice mix found in tropical drinks.

Hala Kahiki

Our favorite part about this drink was the foam on top — the texture was great and it made for a very pretty cocktail! Overall, it was good but not as exciting as some other choices.

The Zambezi Sour is made with Buffalo Trace Burboun, Falernum, simple syrup, and lime and grapefruit juices. This one is perfect for grapefruit lovers!

Zambezi Sour

While it wasn’t overwhelming, the grapefruit was nice and refreshing — and our sweet-drink-loving reporter thought it was the perfect balance of sweet and sour. She couldn’t really taste the bourbon, however, which could be good or bad depending on what you’re looking for.

On to the food! We tried the Angus 1/2 lb Hawaiian Cheeseburger, the Hawaiian Platter with Teriyaki Chicken, and the Poke Bowl.

Ready to eat?

The Hawaiian Cheeseburger is made with grilled pineapple, applewood-smoked bacon, havarti cheese, butter lettuce, tomato, onions, and sweet-and-spicy spread and is served with sweet potato fries.

Hawaiian Cheeseburger

This was honestly a pretty basic cheeseburger. It did have a little bit of pineapple on it for a juicy kick, and it was a hefty portion.

Hawaiian Cheeseburger

We didn’t think it was very special, and we wouldn’t go out of our way for it — but we were hungry, and it did the trick. We got this for $18.

Next, we got the Teriyaki Chicken Hawaiian Platter, which is served with jasmine rice, macaroni salad, and tangy slaw. This was actually quite a bit of food, and it reminded us of a family cookout. Everything was well-cooked and while the teriyaki sauce wasn’t very complex, it did have a nice kick to spice things up.

Hawaiian Platter

Both sides were a little disappointing, however. The macaroni salad was a little bland and too mayo-forward, and the slaw could have used a lot more flavor. This was a nice big portion and the chicken was tender and tasty, though, so overall it wasn’t bad. We got this dish for $19.

Lastly, we had the Poke Bowl with Ahi Tuna, which had smashed avocado, sliced cucumber, edamame, and imitation crab salad with sushi rice, and was topped with crispy fried onions and togarashi aioli. We really liked this one. It was surprisingly spicy, so keep that in mind if you’re not a fan of heat. The tuna was soft and there was a nice selection of toppings to make this interesting. We especially loved the togarashi aioli.

Poke Bowl

Overall, this was a delicious dish and there was quite a bit of it — so you could probably share or have leftovers if you prefer. We got this for $18 as well.

Nosh or Not

Head to Trader Sam’s if…

  • You LOVE Jungle Cruise or miss Adventurer’s Club and are looking for impeccable theming
  • You’re looking for a fun drink and want a super unique souvenir cup
  • You’re looking for a fantastic experience with a great atmosphere, fun bartenders, and interactive surroundings

Skip Trader Sam’s if…

  • You’re looking for top-notch food
  • Are looking for a spot that’s more under the radar
  • Want a spot that is family-friendly after a late park night

Overall

Overall, this spot is great for the atmosphere and drinks, but we wouldn’t come here strictly for the food. If you’re looking for an entertaining, unique way to spend some downtime in Disneyland, this spot should probably be on your list. Even with the average food, we really enjoyed our time here! Keep in mind that if you don’t get a reservation, this spot now has a walk-up waitlist, and you can join starting at 11 AM for outdoor dining, and 4 PM for indoor dining.

We’re always trying Disney dining locations to keep you up to speed on the best places to eat on your vacation, so stay tuned to DFB for more!

REVIEW: Stop Skipping This Dole Whip Treat in Disney World

Looking to dress up your Dole Whip game? We’ve got just the snack for you!

Sunshine Tree Terrace

There are so many delicious Dole Whip treats around Disney World including a POG juice float (if you know, you know) and an entire Dole Whip flight. Recently, we took a break during a visit to Magic Kingdom to find one of the tastiest snacks to cool off with at the park — this one did not disappoint!

It’s no secret that Adventureland is full of great snack options including the Spring Roll cart and classic pineapple Dole Whip. However, on a hot and muggy park day, you may be looking for a snack that’s just a bit zestier, and we’ve got a great option for you to try!

Many people go straight to Aloha Isle to order their Dole Whip…but there are some great snacks over at Sunshine Tree Terrace! Allow us to reintroduce you to the Orange Fanta Swirl Float. You can find this snack at Sunshine Tree Terrace by pick up or Mobile Order for $5.99.

Orange Fanta Swirl Float

This orange delight was delicious! It’s made of creamy, thick Dole Whip at the top and the bottom half of the cup is full of Orange Fanta soda. For this review we chose the Orange Dole Whip flavor however, there were several more options to choose from including classic pineapple, vanilla, and vanilla swirl combination. There are other soda floats available here but we enjoyed the orange on orange action!

Orange Dole Whip Swirl on top of Orange Fanta Soda

Once it was made and in hand, we instantly felt cooler against the blazing sun. That first bite of orange flavored Dole Whip was so creamy but you’ll want to eat it quickly because it will melt fast– within a matter of minutes. The inside Dole Whip will crystalize towards the center where it meets the Fanta soda so if you have a texture concern, that would be the one to anticipate.

It melts quickly!

Overall it was a refreshing and tangy snack that not only gave us an option to taste by spoon but also doubled as a drink to wash down the ice cream consistency and refresh before continuing our day.

As always, stay tuned to DFB for all the Disney snack reviews!

‘Dream… and Shine Brighter’ Character Performers Protesting, Refuse to Appear in Parade Until Unequal Pay is Resolved at Disneyland Paris

A performance of the “Dream… and Shine Brighter” parade and stage show at Disneyland Paris was canceled today, February 26, and a later performance went on without character performers as the Cast Members protested unequal pay.

DLP Report shared on Twitter that the first performance was canceled due to the protest but that other performances should go on as planned.

dream shine brighter performer protest
Source: DLP Report

Yesterday, the first performance of “Dream… and Shine Brighter” took place with no characters. DLP Report posted a photo of one of the parade floats with no characters, only dancers.

Twitter user @DLPAngryNerd explained that Disneyland Paris recently brought in new performers who were being paid more than the old performers still doing the same job. The Cast Members then protested the unequal pay by not doing these two parade performances.

DLP Report said in a reply that Disney characters appeared in the next performance of “Dream… and Shine Brighter.” Watch a full performance of “Dream… and Shine Brighter” below.

Over in the U.S.A., negations have stalled between Walt Disney World Resort and Cast Member unions regarding a pay raise as Disney refuses to budge on their offer. The current base pay is $15 per hour. The Service Trades Council Union is asking for $18 per hour now and a plan to eventually raise this to $20 per hour. Disney has offered a $1 raise now and $1 per year annually until reaching $20. Cast Members protested in November against Disney’s reluctance to raise wages amid inflation concerns and the rise in the cost of living in the Orlando area with signs that read “Full-time can’t buy diapers!” and “Full-time can’t buy formula!” among others. Cast Members asking for a larger, more immediate raise also cite financial distress that won’t be solved by long-term incremental increases.
