Do you drive around Disney World?
With more and more traffic headed to Disney World every year, though, it’s become evident that some of the roads need to be updated. That’s exactly what Disney plans on doing, though, with a massive project that will drastically improve the roads and traffic around the resort.
According to The Orlando Business Journal, Disney’s Reedy Creek Improvement District just approved a $176 million project to improve roadways around Disney World. This project would be one of the largest projects ever for the district.
The district approved a $74.5 million increase to its first budget for what will be the third phase of the extension of World Drive North. That includes widening the lanes that lead through Disney World to Magic Kingdom from two to four lanes.
The project will include approximately construction of “approximately 1.6 miles of four-lane roadway and a four-lane, roughly 100-foot vehicular bridge,” as well as “mechanically stabilized earth retaining walls, and three roundabouts.” It also includes protection structures for utilities, the relocation of underground utility conveyance systems, lighting, pavement marking, landscaping, and more.
The district increased its budget due to inflation, as well as to include temporary installations to “cover for other infrastructure being replaced during the project.” The extra funds will also go to “cure” disruptions that happen once the construction begins.
Disney has not yet released a timeline for when it hopes to have the road work done, but it’s expected that the work will take about two years after it has started.
Although Disney’s Reedy Creek Improvement District currently governs things around Disney World, it will soon be completely revamped after the state of Florida voted to do so. When the law is made official, the RCID is set to change its name and the Florida Governor will be able to appoint five members to the board. Some of the board’s powers will also change.
How that will affect the future of projects like this remains to be seen, but we’ll continue to keep an eye on the developing situation, so stay tuned to DFB for more.
