5 Tips for Scoring a TRON Virtual Queue Spot in Disney World

Well, it’s FINALLY happening. TRON Lightcycle / Run is opening — and it’s opening EARLY.

TRON Lightcycle / Run

So you’re ready to hop onboard and grab a ride on a lightcycle, right? You’ve read all about everything you need to know about the ride, how to use the locker system, and more. But are you ready to grab that elusive boarding group that will get you in the ride’s virtual queue? It’s not going to be easy, but here are our top tips to get you that spot!

First of all, you’ll need to know that TRON Lightcycle / Run will NOT have a standby line, so your best shot at riding it is to land a boarding group through Disney World’s virtual queue system. If you’re not familiar with Disney’s virtual queue system, we have a COMPLETE guide here.

The thing is, EVERYONE is going to be trying to get a ride on this attraction because it’s new, so you’ll need to know some tricks that will help land you that boarding group.

Make a Park Pass Reservation

If you have plans to ride TRON Lightcycle / Run on a given day, don’t forget to make a park pass reservation for Magic Kingdom FOR that day. If you don’t have that, you will not be able to use the virtual queue system in the My Disney Experience app. Note that EVERYONE in your party will need to have a park pass reservation for Magic Kingdom, too.

Here’s the thing, with Magic Kingdom opening this ride, park pass reservations could sell out quickly for MANY days, so our best tip is to make those park pass reservations as SOON as you can! But once you have that park pass reservation, you’re all set to access the virtual queue.

Set that alarm

Okay, so you’ll want to wake up EARLY on the day you want to ride TRON Lightcycle / Run. The ride will have two Boarding Group distribution times each day: 7AM and 1PM. But you’ll want to try for that 7AM slot first. So to be on the safe, side, be awake and ready to go BEFORE 7AM.

This is actually one of those things you have control over when trying to grab a boarding group, so be sure to set that wake-up time and/or alarm. Note that you can be ANYWHERE at 7AM to grab a boarding pass, so you can still do it in your pajamas in your Disney World hotel room.

If you don’t have any luck at 7AM and you’re trying for the 1PM slot, you will need your entire party scanned into Magic Kingdom, so make sure everyone is ready to go if you want to ride TRON Lightcycle / Run together.

Don’t forget those distribution times

As we previously stated, you’ll have two opportunities to get a boarding pass through the virtual queue for TRON Lightcycle / Run. However, as we also previously stated, you want to try for that 7AM one first. Why? As we’ve seen with previous rides, even if you get a boarding group at 1PM, technical difficulties and ride closures could mean your group doesn’t get to ride that day.

An additional chance to join the virtual queue will be offered to guests who qualify for Extended Evening Hours at 6PM on select dates. Extended Evening Hours are ONLY open to guests staying at a Deluxe Disney Resort, Disney Deluxe Villa, and select other resorts and are only offered on specific days.

Be ready to snag a boarding group QUICKLY

Okay, so you’re up at 7AM and you’re ready to grab that boarding group. Here are the BEST things you can do to make sure you actually DO get one!

1. Don’t Use Disney’s Wi-Fi

If you’re on Disney property, you may be tempted to leave your phone connected to Disney Wi-Fi. But here’s the thing: Disney Wi-Fi is notoriously spotty and it could cost you a spot in the virtual queue. So turn off Wi-Fi on your phone BEFORE the boarding group distribution time.

TRON Lightcycle / Run

If you do this, be sure to completely exit out of the My Disney Experience app and reload it just before the hour. This will refresh My Disney Experience app so you’ll be completely good to go.

2. When the time comes, select “Join Virtual Queue”

Right on the hour, select “Join Virtual Queue.” The next screen will ask you to confirm everyone who will be joining the virtual queue. Everyone on your friends and family list should be selected — confirm that and click on “Join Virtual Queue” again.

If all goes well, you’ll be assigned a boarding group with an estimated waiting time on how long you’ll have to wait before you can join the ride’s physical queue.

3. Turn on your push notifications

Be sure you have enabled push notifications on your phone so the My Disney Experience app can send you a notification when your boarding group is called. After all that work, you don’t want to miss out on it, do you?

Problems? Talk to a Cast Member

If you have any problems while trying to grab that virtual queue or you get an error message or come across a problem or glitch with the My Disney Experience app, talk to a Cast Member as soon as you can. They may be able to help you. It DOES happen, and Cast Members absolutely understand that. You’ll want to visit Guest Relations as soon as you can. We also recommend taking screenshots in case something goes wrong and a Cast Member may be able to help you out if you politely ask.

If all else fails, though, you have one more option: buy the Individual Lightning Lane option for the ride. Individual Lightning Lanes become available at 7AM for hotel guests and at park opening for all other guests. These will probably sell out fast, so you might want to have one member of your party working on getting that for you while the rest work on grabbing that virtual queue. If you both succeed, you’ve just managed TWO rides on what will probably be Disney World’s new most popular attraction.

TRON Is Better AFTER DARK — Here’s How To Ride It at Night in Disney World

Our biggest tip is to make sure you’re giving yourself and your party as many chances as you can to ride TRON Lightcycle / Run. That means getting up early and aiming for that 7AM distribution time with the My Disney Experience app open and ready to go. If you don’t succeed at 7AM, follow the same steps for the 1PM time (and the 6PM time, if you qualify).

Good luck!
