On Wednesday afternoon, the new Central Florida Tourism Oversight District (CFTOD) had its first meeting at the B Resort & Spa in Disney Springs at Walt Disney World.

During the meeting, the five members appointed to the new board mostly listened to the public and workers. AP News is reporting that the group “hinted Wednesday at future controversial actions they may take, including prohibiting COVID-19 restrictions at Disney World and recommending the elimination of two cities that were created after the Florida Legislature in 1967 approved the theme park resort’s self-governance.”

According to an article in the Orlando Business Journal, one member of the board “alluded to potentially seeking to eliminate the cities of Bay Lake and Lake Buena Vista from the district altogether. ‘Are they legally necessary is an important question,’ they said.” Additionally, they “want the district to oversee all of those cities’ law enforcement contracts or ensure the cities cannot supersede the district’s building codes or land-planning powers.”

In other highlights from the meeting, the new committee was seemingly welcomed into the fold. The general consensus was said to be that of a back-to-business acceptance, similar to what we saw from Josh D’Amaro earlier in the week.
