Everything You Need to Know About Disney World’s Newest Restaurant: Roundup Rodeo BBQ

The time is finally here! After several delays, Roundup Rodeo BBQ has officially opened at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

Before we jump into the food, I want to talk about the atmosphere and the interior. From the outside, it looks absolutely adorable, and when you enter the restaurant, it gets even cuter. There’s so much to see inside. It looks like something that Andy made in his backyard out of all the different materials he could find. You’ll find a wall made of a puzzle, wrapping paper as the floor, and various items to create the roof. My biggest piece of advice that I can give you is that once you finish eating, take a lap around the restaurant. Be sure to look up at the ceiling and down to see the floor and everything in between.

The amount of detail put into the theming and storyline is incredible. Throughout your dining experience, you will hear toys come over the speakers. There’s a little dance party with Partysaurus Tex, the Green Army Men radio in saying they’ve spotted a yard sale, and at one point, it’s announced that Andy is coming, and everyone freezes until he leaves. Those little moments are not only fun for the kids but also for the adults. We all took freezing when Andy was approaching very seriously.

Enough about that let’s move on to the food portion. If you snagged a reservation for this, be sure to come hungry. It feels like the food is never-ending, and it’s pretty tasty. Roundup Rodeo BBQ is open for lunch and dinner. The pricing for this location is $45 per adult and $25 per child, plus tax and gratuity. Currently, they are not accepting any discounts because the restaurant is brand new.

This is an all-you-care-to-enjoy type of restaurant. At first, they will ask the table to pick four sides from the menu, but after choosing those, you can order the rest once the others have been brought to the table. After working as a team and figuring out our first four sides, our excellent server Lacey brought over the bread service.

Bread Service & Salads

There were several allergies at the table for this review—I with my dairy allergy and Kylie with her shellfish, tree nuts, and peanut allergy. The cast members here were very serious about our dietary restrictions, which was fantastic. Due to that little road but we got two types of bread. We got the standard The Prospector’s Homemade Cheddar Biscuits with Sweet Pepper Jelly. They also brought out their allergy-friendly bread, a very fluffy and soft dinner roll served with sweet pepper jelly.

Ryno, Craig, and Kylie enjoyed the cheddar biscuits, but a server passed by and told us what they should do. He said to split the biscuit in half and create a brisket sandwich when the platters arrive. We recommend doing that. I had the gluten-free bread, which also happened to be dairy free. This was the best allergy-friendly bread I have ever had at Walt Disney World. The sweet pepper jelly was delicious. I wanted to bottle it up and bring it home. It was sweet, but it had a little kick to it from the pepper, and it paired with the bread very well.

After indulging in the bread, we got the three salads offered. The Rootin’ Tootin Tomato Salad, Rex’s Romaine and Kale Salad, and Wheezy’s Watermelon Salad. We all agreed that the standout salad was the tomato salad which is funny because we weren’t sure if it would be good. I am not a huge fan of tomatoes unless they’re in a sandwich, but the white balsamic vinaigrette with the pickled red onions made this salad the winner.

The watermelon salad was nothing special, but the fruit was fresh and perfect for a hot day. The romaine and kale salad was nothing to write home about. It was just a bunch of leaves, so if you want to get your greens in before the meats arrive, eat that salad.

Platters

There are two platters to choose from; the Round Up Some Chow! and Trixie’s Plant-based Trio. Of course, we got both. First, let’s dive into the platter filled with house-smoked meats.

The Round Up Some Chow! came with Evil Dr. Smoked Ribs, Buttercup’s Beef Brisket, There’s a Sausage in my Boot, and the BBQ Chicken-with style. According to Craig, Kylie, and Ryno, the standouts from this platter were the ribs and the chicken. Kylie said the ribs fell off the bone and that she enjoyed the sweet flavor. Craig, the brisket king, was very disappointed in the brisket served here. Ryno enjoyed the Sausage in my Boot despite its weird presentation.

For our friends who don’t like smoked meats, you can order a salmon dish upon request. Craig tried that dish and wasn’t very impressed with it, but it’s a great option to have if someone if your group would prefer that.

I got Trixie’s Plant-based Trio, and let me start by saying that I am so surprised that I ate most of what was on that platter. I did share it with my friends at the table so they could get a taste, and I say I’m surprised because I don’t usually eat a lot; I always have leftovers. That was not the case here.

Trixie’s trio is made of the Combat Carloflower (Cauliflower), Scrumptious Bratwurst, and the Rip Roarin’ Rib Chop. The standouts from here are the cauliflower covered in a harissa drizzle and the rib chop covered in a sweet glaze. Sadly, yet expected, the bratwurst wasn’t anything extravagant, but it was better than the others I have tried on property, especially when paired with the sweet BBQ sauce that’s on the table.

In the past few dining reviews like Be Our Guest Restaurant and Cinderella’s Royal Table, I had issues justifying the price based on the food I had. Honestly, I was worried the same thing would happen again. I can happily report that this is not the case; I left here full. I definitely ate $45 worth of food and was full for the rest of the day.

Reach for the Sides

As I mentioned, we had to pick four sides to start with, and then we could order the ones we didn’t try after we got the original four. We came together as a team and ordered the Veggie Slaw, Campfire-roasted Vegetables, Buckin’ Baked Beans, and the Force Field Fried Pickles. All of those are plant-based except for the fried pickles.

Of these four, I would say the beans were the winner for me. They were so good and had the perfect amount of sweetness. The beans paired well with any of the items from the platter. We all enjoyed the roasted vegetables. Not only were they cooked and seasoned perfectly, the vegetables were noticeably fresh. Craig, Kylie, and Ryno enjoyed the fried pickles and the roasted vegetables from this round. The veggie slaw is something none of us would order again; it just wasn’t that great.

The second round of sides we ordered was mainly for the rest of the table since I had already indulged in my plant-based sides. We got Slinky Doooooooog’s Mac & Cheese, The Married Spuds, Cowspoke Corn on the Cob, and the Mean Old Potato Salad.

As a spectator, I thought the mac & cheese looked good but then was quickly proven wrong. According to Ryno, it felt dry and, at the same time, thick, almost like someone had left it out on the counter too long. As for Craig, he liked the corn on the cob but did mention it needed something acidic added to it, like lime, to just cut the sweetness down. Kylie loved the fried pickles. That was her favorite side she tried, and she recommends that you stay away from the mac & cheese.

Dessert Time!

The desserts here are served like mini pies in glass jars, which I thought looked adorable. I didn’t get to try everyone’s dessert, but thankfully, they had a dairy-free option for me which was the plant-based dessert. It was Gruff’s Peach Strawberry Pie, and I was pleasantly surprised. I wasn’t sure how those flavors would blend, but they blended seamlessly. The cookie part at the bottom of the pie added texture and a nice contrast to heavy fruit flavors. Now let’s list everyone’s favorite dessert.

Craig – Billy’s Chocolate Silk Pie

Kylie has two desserts tied for first place: Bo’s Lemon and Blueberry Cheesecake and Billy’s Chocolate Silk Pie.

Ryno – Bo’s Lemon and Blueberry Cheesecake

It seems that you can’t go wrong with the cheesecake option or the silk pie, depending on which type of flavors you enjoy more.

It seems like Goat’s Apple Pie was very middle of the road and didn’t make it to anyone’s top spot.

Overall Thoughts

I loved this restaurant, and I will be coming back within the next few months. The theming mixed with the food just makes for the perfect place. Especially since there are not many great food options at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, this is a wonderful addition. Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater has always been my go-to restaurant when visiting this park, and now I think I’ll have to switch between the two.

If you have anyone in your life who loves Toy Story, then this restaurant needs to be on your must-do list. My wife loves the characters from the films, so I know the next time I go, it will be with her. While I was wandering around the restaurant, all I could think was, “wow, she would love this,” so please, if you are a fan or know someone who is, take them here.

Now I have a question for you, do you have a reservation booked for Roundup Rodeo BBQ anytime soon? Or is this on your skip list?
