In a blow for Disney guests traveling by car to the popular community area Disney Springs, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has canceled plans to build a flyover ramp into the busy area. The area in question is near the old Crossroads plaza, which was demolished in 2021 in an effort to improve congestion in the ever-growing area between the SR-535 (near Hotel Plaza Blvd) and Disney Springs.
The redesigned plan will now form a loop that will go in the opposite direction from SR-535 to westbound I-4.
The Interchange of I-4 and Apopka-Vineland Road (State Road (S.R.) 535) is a heavily traveled gateway to theme parks, shopping, and resorts. To accommodate current traffic and future needs, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) will reconstruct the interchange to enhance safety and improve access to and from westbound I-4. Construction is expected to start in fall 2023. FDOT anticipates making additional improvements for eastbound travel in the interchange as additional funding becomes available in the future. Those improvements will be made as part of a separate project under a new contract. This design-build project also includes I-4 improvements from west of S.R. 536 to west of Daryl Carter Parkway.
