As Japan moves to shed the last of its COVID-19 protocols ahead of the May 8 reclassification of the virus to a level of least concern, Tokyo Disney Resort has announced that everyone may take off their masks while at both Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea starting next week!
Starting March 13, in line with the Japanese government’s updated guidelines toward masking, guests visiting Tokyo Disneyland or Tokyo DisneySea may choose whether or not to wear a mask while visiting the park, both indoors and outside. Currently, the park only allows guests to not wear masks while outdoors except while viewing entertainment, during which masks are required.
Unlike at Universal Studios Japan, this rule change will also apply to Cast Members, who will be allowed to perform all duties without a mask on stage from March 13 as well.
The update on the official Tokyo Disney Resort website did leave some room for the rules to come back, stating “there may be cases when guests will be requested to wear a mask due to reasons associated with preventing infections, operational purposes, etc.” However as it stands, all COVID-19 restrictions are set to end nationwide, including at theme parks, on May 8.
Last week, we reported on the consortium of Japanese amusement and theme park owners agreeing to allow both guests and employees to make masking a personal choice starting this month. A couple days later, Universal Studios Japan announced its plans to allow guests to not wear masks while visiting the park starting on the same day, March 13.
Following this revision, Shanghai Disneyland will be the last park to have mask requirements, which require guests to wear a mask while indoors or viewing entertainment. Hong Kong Disneyland removed its mask guidance on March 1 in line with the city lifting its long-held indoor and outdoor mandate.
