We won’t even ask because we bet many of our readers own at least one Disney Funko POP! figure, if not more!
Funko POP! figures have been so trendy for those of us who like the little collectibles, especially when we can get figures of characters from our favorite movies, our favorite Disney Parks rides, and even our favorite Marvel superheroes. Of course, Funko has other collectibles, too, including games, backpacks, and accessories. But is Funko fever finally fading? Well, the answer could be “yes.”
According to NPR, Funko plans on throwing away $30 million worth of its inventory. Why? Well, the company can’t afford to hold onto all the inventory it’s made. Demand has gone down for the little figures and its current inventory is SO full that Funko is renting storage containers to store all the excess.
Funko said that by the end of last year, its inventory totaled $246 million worth of product — soaring 48% percent from a year earlier. In Q4, the company reported a loss of nearly $47 million — the year before, the company reported a $17 million profit.
Funko is also implementing other cost-saving measures, in addition to dumping inventory. This will include a 10% cut in its workforce.
So does this mean the end of Funko POPs? Well, according to toy consultant Juli Lennett, with NPD Group, this news comes as a surprise. She told NPR, “I was a bit surprised because the collectible market is one of the big stories for 2022. Collectibles were up 24%. … Funko, of course, is the biggest player in that space.”
Some analysts have suggested that the excess Funko inventory be donated or sent to small comic book shops that could use the revenue. Funko hasn’t exactly said HOW it plans on dumping the inventory, but we’ll keep an eye out for more details. Stay tuned to DFB for more!
