Disney Makes Costumes from Recyclables In Sustainability Effort

I have a personal interest in sustainability as a broader topic, and when I saw this article come up on Disney Parks Blog, I thought some of you might be interested in learning about it as well. It starts with one sentence that made me sit up straight in my chair and pay attention. Are you ready?

Did you know that thousands of costumes worn by cast and employees at Disney Parks and Experiences around the world, from cruise ships to high-speed coasters, are made from recycled plastics?

No, I did not know that. Tell me more, DPB! Apparently, recyclable items are not only good to be used in the treasure trove of The Little Mermaid‘s cavern, but they can also be used anywhere and everywhere. Disney is putting solid recycling and upcycling initiatives to the test as they use textiles and objects to create everything from show sets to cast member attire.

Uniquely sustainable costumes have also been designed for cast members and employees across Walt Disney World Resort. If you’ve had the chance to ride the all-new TRON Lightcycle / Run roller coaster at Magic Kingdom Park, you may have noticed the themed costumes worn by cast members. These costumes are actually made from recycled polyester. But that’s not all! Over at Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, 70% of each costume’s base fabric is made from recycled materials, and the metal buttons are made from 75% recycled metals. Food and beverage teams at Walt Disney World wear aprons made from 100% recycled materials, and even the new PhotoPass Green costumes are made from recycled materials!

That was by far the coolest thing I have read today. If you are interested in reading more about how Disney Cruise Line used recycled items for the theatrical adaptation of The Little Mermaid, on the Disney Wish, you can find further details here: ‘Disney The Little Mermaid’ Costumes Are Recycled Treasures Onboard the Disney Wish.
