It’s a tale as old as Disney Parks themselves. When visiting Walt Disney World, do you rely on the transportation options available at the resort or take your own vehicle? Both scenarios have pros and cons, so today, we will explore each option to help you figure out which will suit your next vacation better.
Disney Transport
The Pros
Walt Disney World has an excellent transportation system using everything from ferries to buses, monorails, and even the newer Disney Skyliner to help get guests where they want to go. The system is easy, efficient, and free, taking the burden of having your own vehicle (along with the cost) out of your vacation budget. It is a great way to get around without navigating the roads, especially if you are visiting from overseas and not familiar with driving on the right side of the road.
The Cons
The system can get extremely busy, and in peak season, you can find yourselves waiting for several different buses or boatloads of people to travel to the parks before your position in the queue reaches the front. To make things more complex, the weather exposure during that time can be brutal if the area isn’t covered. Another consideration is that you don’t have the option to use any mode of transport in any direction; only specific services can connect with your particular destinations. If you are me, and the boat ride doesn’t do your travel sickness any favors, it might be best to look at different options.
Taking Your Car or Renting One
The Pros
Having your car at Walt Disney World is a luxury that I’ve valued many times. You can store all of your warmer things for later in the evening if you are staying all day, or even duck out to place souvenirs in a safe place so you won’t need to carry them around. Another considerable advantage of having your vehicle is the knowledge that you can come and go as you please, no longer needing to wait with young children in long lines when everyone wants to exit the park after the fireworks.
The Cons
There are two factors in the con list for this option, the cost and the hassle. For some people, navigating the roads can be very stressful, and the mere idea of needing to choose the right lane and find a parking spot is enough to send them packing. While Disney rolled back their paid parking scheme in January to reinstate complimentary parking for resort guests at your hotel, the parks are a different story. Bringing your vehicle to the Disney theme park still comes at a cost: Preferred parking for a car or motorcycle carries a seasonal rate of $45 to $50 per day. Standard parking for a car or motorcycle is $25 per day. A one-day pass is good for all four of the Walt Disney World theme parks.
