You might have noticed that in the last decade, Disney has been putting a lot of work into their environmental impact, taking strides to reduce their carbon footprint. One of the ways they are doing this is with an emphasis on renewable energy through solar power.

Using solar energy isn’t a new concept, but we are pushing the boundaries as part of Disney Planet Possible – and helping the habitats we call home in the process. Disney has chosen Earth Month as the perfect time to announce a new project at Disneyland Paris, where construction has begun on the final phase of what will be the largest solar canopy plant in all of Europe. As the project reaches completion later this year, the solar canopy plant is expected to produce 36 GWh/year, a figure that Disney offers the comparison of being equivalent to the energy consumption of a town of 17,400 people.

How will this project be constructed in a park location with little space to spare? The solar-powering canopy will cover the entire guest parking lot, which includes 11,200 parking spaces, while also providing Disney guests shade and shelter from direct sunlight, rain or snow. That is pretty impressive.
