Even though the city of Urayasu, Chiba Prefecture, was being pelted with substantial rain, long lines began to form outside the popular Disney Tokyo Resort theme park just outside the heart of Japan’s capital. Disney fans from all over the region had gathered to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the park’s opening in 1983.
The event opened with a ceremony hosted by the chairman of Oriental Land Co., Toshio Kagami, and the CEO of The Walt Disney Company, Robert Iger, who spoke at the proceedings to say, “The 40th-anniversary celebrations are the beginning of the next chapter in our story.”
Though guests reported that not everything went to plan, with some of the festivities suffering from cancelations, the celebration included a parade, new merchandise, and special food and drink items that delighted the crowds. Take a look at some of the images below shared by Disney.
