‘Jurassic Park’ as a Franchise
The “Jurassic Park” franchise began as a 1993 American science-fiction film directed by Steven Spielberg and produced by Kathleen Kennedy and Gerald R. Molen. It is based on the 1990 novel of the same name by Michael Crichton. The film stars Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, Richard Attenborough, Bob Peck, Martin Ferrero, BD Wong, Samuel L. Jackson, Wayne Knight, Joseph Mazzello, and Ariana Richards.
The film is set on the fictional island of Isla Nublar, located off Central America’s Pacific Coast near Costa Rica, where a billionaire philanthropist and a small team of genetic scientists have created a wildlife park of dinosaurs. Before the park’s grand opening, a tropical storm delays the arrival of a group of important experts, who have been invited to tour the park and see the dinosaurs for themselves. The hope is these experts within each of their fields will be able to “greenlight” the park for opening to the public; however, the park’s security systems are sabotaged by a disgruntled employee, and the dinosaurs escape from their enclosures. A chain of horrific events ensue, threatening the lives of the visitors as well as the park’s staff.
“Jurassic Park” was a critical and commercial success, grossing over $914 million worldwide on a production budget of only $63 million. The film was praised for its special effects, which were created by Industrial Light & Magic. “Jurassic Park” won three Academy Awards for its technical achievements, and is considered to be one of the greatest science fiction films of all time. The film has been followed by six sequels, including “Jurassic Park: The Lost World” (1997), “Jurassic Park III” (2001), “Jurassic World” (2015), “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” (2018), “Battle at Big Rock” (2019) and “Jurassic World Dominion” (2022).
