We recently had an opportunity to check on the construction progress being made for the Journey of Water walk-through attraction at EPCOT, based on the 2016 film “Moana.”
Major milestones have continued to pour in this week, as Disney itself posted a TikTok video sharing detailed glimpses of the attraction’s running water features for the first time up close.
Journey of Water Construction Update
Construction materials are piled near the entrance, where a planter is still being filled with foliage. Guests enter next to the rock structure carved with Te Fiti’s swirl symbol. Pathways are clearly visible, lined with small rocks.
Trees encircle the attraction. We saw crew members working under the triangular canopies that cover one section.
The curved poles are lampposts and orb-shaped lamps have already been hung from some of them. Ropes are wrapped around the poles, which are clustered together in groups of two or three. The walkthrough attraction is made up of water features built into fake rockwork. The rocks are covered in fake plants and moss, and feature some Easter egg carvings.
A sidewalk cuts between construction walls towards the center of EPCOT, the future location of Dreamer’s Point with a new Walt Disney statue.
The water features will be controlled from this station covered by two metal awnings and surrounded by green fencing. Right now, the station is completely visible, but with more trees and foliage, it will probably be mostly hidden from guest view — at least, on the ground. It may still be visible from the Monorail.
According to CEO Bob Iger, Journey of Water, Inspired by “Moana” is the last step in the years-long EPCOT reimagining. It’s expected to open later this year, along with Dreamer’s Point, CommuniCore Hall, and CommuniCore Plaza.
Journey of Water concept art shows flowing waterfalls as well as water jumping over pathways. The giant Te Fiti statue sits next to a pool of water near the back of the attraction.
Journey of Water, Inspired by “Moana” is part of the World Nature neighborhood of EPCOT. It is set to open this fall.
