Getting ready for a Disney World vacation can be a lot.

From booking your Park Pass Reservations and narrowing down the right hotel choice for your group to snagging your favorite Advanced Dining Reservations — it all takes a lot of research and planning! But sometimes, no matter how much you plan, things in Disney World can get a bit challenging. Occasionally, you might have to deal with something you can’t plan for — unexpected ride closures.

Disney does schedule some ride closures in advance so that they can refurbish the attractions (and you’ll be able to find out about those ahead of time). But, sometimes rides have technical difficulties that require Cast Members to shut the ride down while they work on fixing the problem. Today, multiple rides went down at once — and two of them were MAJOR attractions.

This morning, both TRON Lightcycle / Run and Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance were down at the same time! During this time, Test Track and Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress were also experiencing technical difficulties.

Sometimes, these ride closures don’t last very long. But occasionally, we’ve seen rides close for the better part of the day. Not long after we noticed that TRON had closed, Cast Members noted that it was testing and would be back up and running shortly.

It’s a good idea to be mentally prepared for these closures so that when they happen you’re not completely caught off guard. Sometimes it makes sense to try to do your must-do rides in the morning so that if they do close at the end of the night, you’re not stuck missing out on them.

If you do encounter a ride closure during your trip, there are a few things you can do. First, keep checking the My Disney Experience App for updates about the ride. You can also talk to a Cast Member about the ride — they won’t always be able to give you details, but occasionally they can share with you an idea of how long the closure might last.

If you had a Lightning Lane reserved for an attraction during its closure and the ride does not reopen at all during the time of your Lightning Lane reservation, you will be given a multi-experience redemption. This is like a general Lightning Lane reservation — it’s good for either your original ride (when it reopens), or you can use it on a different ride (although some may be excluded, unless it was the ride you’d already booked for).
