How do you take your coffee? Some like it hot, some like it iced — maybe you like it light and sweet or dark and bold.

For those who love iced coffee and drinks, you probably know that the type of ice can make all the difference. And, no matter what you’re into, a big change is coming to Starbucks drinks soon that we think you might want to know about!

If you’re slightly addicted to iced drinks from Starbucks (don’t worry — us too) then get ready for some serious change! According to Business Insider, the coffee chain will be introducing a new type of ice in stores. Right now, Starbucks serves cubed ice or ice chips in its drinks, however, nugget ice is on the way!

Nugget or pellet ice is more uniform in shape, and has become increasingly popular lately. Other popular chains like Sonic and Chick Fil A also serve this type of ice. Per Starbucks, iced drinks make up 70% of its sales, and they’ve previously come up with new ways to speed up the ice-making process.

Apparently, the nugget ice doesn’t melt any faster than Starbucks’ current cubes, despite Starbucks fans initially being worried that it might.

“As we continue to innovate and make investments in the Starbucks experience for our partners (baristas) and customers, we are introducing new machines that make nugget ice to select stores this year. Like many of our recent investments, this machine allows partners to focus on delivering the Starbucks experience while hand-crafting the same delicious, high-quality iced beverages our customers have come to expect from Starbucks,” the company said.

Starbucks also shared that these new ice machines will use less water to make ice, and it will be easier to blend into its signature Frappuccinos. The changes will begin to roll out slowly, though, with the company sharing it may take years before the transition is finally complete.
