After seeing the film Saturday night, one of our readers shared their heartfelt review of Disney’s live-action The Little Mermaid. We thought others might be interested in reading it, too, so take a look below, and if you’ve seen the new film, leave us your review in the comments section.
I watched The Little Mermaid last night. I’ve been waiting for this. I remember turning 6 when the animated movie released it was around my Birthday. I remember the movie theater & that we went in a group with my cousins and the other kids in the neighborhood.
As I sat in the theater last night, I found myself comparing the new little mermaid to the memories of watching the animated [The] Little Mermaid. I started looking around at a theater full of kids all races. There were girls dressed as animated Ariel, live-action Ariel, a mix of both & their own personal rendition of mermaids. They reached to the screen as Ariel sang the last line of a Part of Your World. I got choked up. I remembered doing that & I felt like I did at 6. They jumped out of their seats and danced during Under the Sea. I could remember how I had squirmed with excitement & giggles. They gasped as Eric fell into the water & silently sank. They were clapping when Ariel and Eric finally kissed. At the end they were all out in front of the screen dancing and singing. They didn’t care that she didn’t look like the animated Ariel. She was their little mermaid. I didn’t care that this wasn’t the little mermaid I had grown up with. She was beautiful and new. She was meant for them.
