After their first-ever drop in subscribers during quarter one of 2023, Disney+ lost another 4 million subscribers in quarter two.
Disney has narrowed their streaming losses by $400 million, which is down 26%.
Like the last drop in subscribers, this drop stemmed from Disney+ Hotstar, which is offered in India and parts of Southeast Asia. Last year, Disney lost streaming rights to Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket matches, leading to the service losing 3.8 million subscribers in quarter one. In quarter two, Disney+ Hotstar lost 4.6 million subscribers.
In the U.S. and Canada, Disney+ lost about 300,000 subscribers. But Disney+ Hotstar gained about 1 million subscribers overall in international markets.
In total at the end of the quarter, Disney+ had 157.8 million subscribers. Experts estimated the streaming service would gain enough subs to reach 163.17 subscribers.
Hulu gained 200,000 subscribers for a total of 48.2 million and ESPN+ gained 400,000 for a total of 25.3 million.
Disney’s second fiscal quarter ran from early January to late March. The entirety of “Star Wars: The Bad Batch” season 2 aired during this quarter, and “The Mandalorian” season 3 premiered. “National Treasure: Edge of History” ended and was later canceled.
“Encanto” on Disney+ topped Nielsen’s list of streaming movies last year. Check out our list of everything new coming to Disney+ in 2023.
