Marvel Stops Production on Movie Due To Writers Strike

Marvel has several TV shows and a LOT of movies already in its pipeline.

We’ve got the Secret Invasion series coming to Disney+, as well as a second season of LokiGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 just released to theaters. The Marvels arrives in theaters later this year. Plus there are more movies and shows in the works, some of which are already in production. However, the Writers Strike has already put a wrench in Marvel’s plan for at least one of its movies.

If you don’t know what’s going on, the Writers Guild of America recently went on strike after negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) broke down. Some of the guild’s demands include an increase in pay and residuals (including pay and residuals received for shows on streaming platforms), as well as AI regulation.

As a result, many TV and film productions may be halted, and some productions have already stopped. One Marvel film has also been impacted by the strike. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel Studios has shut down production on its Blade film, which was supposed to begin filming next month in Atlanta with Mahershala Ali as its lead. This will be the first big movie to be affected by the strike.

Marvel had recently hired Nic Pizzolatto (True Detective) to write the script, but the writer’s strike will prevent the script from being finished in time to begin filming. Instead, production on the movie will restart once the strike is over.

The strike could potentially impact other Marvel productions, too. At the time, Marvel planned on having three movies shooting at the same time, as well as two series. Some of those productions could be the next to be delayed, including Fantastic Four, which is set to start filming in early 2024.

However, even more Marvel projects could be impacted, as Marvel generally has a writer on set to rework scenes if needed. That includes the movies Captain America: New World OrderDeadpool 3, and Thunderbolts. Marvel TV shows that could be affected include Agatha: Coven of Chaos and Wonder Man.

Currently, there isn’t a timeline on how long the strike will last or when it will end, but we expect that if it continues, it will delay even more Marvel, as well as Disney, projects. We’ll keep an eye on timelines and let you know if we learn about other ways the strike is impacting Disney, so be sure to stay tuned to DFB for more.
