Disney Lorcana France Demo Session

During the week of the 22nd, Lorcana was being demoed for game stores over in France. Thanks to the Lorcana France TCG Twitter account, we received some additional news about the game.

According to this thread, set 2 and 3 for the game are currently being printed. Set 4 and 5 are currently in the design process, with set 7 being currently in development. As a reminder, it has been announced that Lorcana will have four expansion sets released per year.

Along with the expansion news, it was announced that Illumieer’s Trove will be printed in only English for the first two sets.

We also got to see some additional photos of the product, including the Elsa-themed card sleeves and card packs.

Lastly, there was some misinformation surrounding organized play. Initially, it was reported that organized play would be limited in the first year of the game, to give the card pool time to build up and create a solid player base. The Lorcana team then took themselves over to the Disney Lorcana HQ Discord to clear up this information, stating: “Hi, Illumineers! We want to clarify incorrect speculation about Disney Lorcana’s organized play program. While the program’s organized play structure is designed to welcome new players, there is still plenty of room for competitive play! Please stay tuned—we will be releasing more information about our plans soon at https://www.disneylorcana.com/

Gen Con 2023 Event Registration

The last big event of May 2023 was a huge one, as the event catalog and event registration opened for Gen Con 2023. As this is the first time players will be able to purchase products and play the game for the first time, everyone is anxious and excited about this event.

The event catalog opened on May 7th, which allowed attendees of Gen Con to browse the huge event catalog and add events to their wishlists. The wishlist contains all of your events, organized in priority order of your desire to attend them, #1 is most desired and #10 being the least.

Disney Lorcana is bringing three separate events to Gen Con: a learn-to-play demo, the Disney Lorcana Starter Deck Challenge! and a few casual play events.

The Learn to Play events cost $20 dollars a person and between Thursday (when the convention begins) and Sunday (when the convention ends) there were 34 events listed. Each event lasts for an hour and holds a maximum of 60 people. A starter deck is received upon completion of the demo, which is the reason for the high event price.

LearntoPlay

The Starter Deck Challenge has a maximum of 59 players and a cost of $20 dollars, and the price includes a starter deck. This is a 3-round tournament, with prizes for top 8. Prizes include a Disney Lorcana Play Mat and an invitation to participate in a special event on Sunday. There were 7 of these events offered.

Starterdeckchallenge

The final event type, Casual Play, had 3 slots available on Sunday afternoon. This event is free and holds a maximum of 60 players. You need to bring your own deck in order to participate.

casualplay

With so many events available, those attending the convention had high hopes of getting into at least a few of the Lorcana events. Unforuntently, it appears Gen Con had a record number of those attending this year, and when registration opened on May 21st, many were disappointed (including myself!) and the events were sold out before some wishlists were even processed.

As of the time writing this, all Lorcana Gen Con events are completely sold out, and there has been no word from Ravensburger if they will be adding more events in the future.

soldout

It has been recommended to those attending, to purchase generic tickets (which are sold for $2 each) and head over to the headquarters before an event you would like to join starts; sometimes people don’t show up, and then they’ll take generic tickets and allow you to attend. Just remember, the dollar value of the generic tickets needs to match the actual ticket price, so in order to join a Learn to Play Demo or the Starter Deck Challenge! you’ll need to purchase ten generic tickets.

Overall

While May was a bit of a disappointing month for those attending Gen Con (I know several people who even canceled their entire trips to the convention due to not getting Lorcana events) a lot of interesting news was released this month. We were able to get new sneak peeks at products and cards, and it’s reassuring that Ravensburger is already working toward set 7, reaffirming that they’re committed to making this game last.

Remember to check back at the end of June for the next monthly recap!

Deadline Revealed for Disney to Develop Lake Nona Land

Earlier this month, Disney announced they were officially canceling the move of Walt Disney Imagineering from Glendale, California to the Lake Nona area of Florida. The cancelation leaves Disney with a 60-acre parcel of land undeveloped.

The land was purchased back in 2021 by Dynamic Campus LLC, a Disney-connected entity. A Memorandum of Repurchase Option filed with Orange County, Florida in September 2021 includes details on how Disney could keep the property.

The agreement between Dynamic Campus LLC and Lake Nona Property Holdings LLC states Disney would have to reach specific construction milestones to avoid a repurchase option. These milestones are at least 250,000 sq ft of gross interior building area by 2028 and at least 500,000 sq ft of gross interior building area by 2031.

This means Disney has until 2028 to develop the land or they will be forced to sell it back to Lake Nona Property Holdings LLC.

Though the move of Walt Disney Imagineering and other departments was canceled, Disney could use the land for another project. However, nothing has been announced.

History of Lake Nona Relocation

Disney first announced its plans to relocate in July 2021. Then CEO Bob Chapek made the announcement, however, it was not entirely met with positive reception.

After the announcement, many employees left the company or transitioned to a position that would not require them to relocate to Florida. Many Cast Members, including Imagineers, urged Disney not to complete the move.

The campus was originally scheduled to be established in 2023, but the full move from California was later shifted to 2026. Some employees have already moved to Florida, while others had to back out of home purchases when the move was shifted. Cast Members who already moved or made arrangements are being offered the opportunity to stay or relocate back to California at the expense of The Walt Disney Company.

Cast Members were particularly outspoken against the move after the passing of the state’s Parental Rights in Education (a.k.a. “Don’t Say Gay”) bill. When then-CEO Bob Chapek finally denounced the bill, Governor Ron DeSantis began to retaliate against Disney. This ultimately led to DeSantis establishing the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District Board of Supervisors, taking over the Reedy Creek Improvement District.

Disney simply cited “changing business conditions” as the reason for the cancellation. The rather polite language used in the announcement may be due to the pending litigation between Disney and the Florida Governor.

Josh D’Amaro — chairman of Disney’s parks, experiences, and products division — released a memo to employees announcing the move was canceled. He said, “This was not an easy decision to make, but I believe it is the right one.”

He reiterated in the memo that Disney is still planning to invest $17 billion in Florida over the next 10 years. This will include 13,000 new jobs. Disney currently employs over 75,000 in Florida alone.

Wen has reprised the voice role of Mulan multiple times, including in “Mulan II,” “Sofia the First,” and “Ralph Breaks the Internet.” She made a cameo appearance in the live-action “Mulan” remake. She was dubbed a Disney Legend in 2019, just before the live-action “Mulan” was released.

Wen has not only voiced a Disney Princess but also appeared in the “Star Wars” and Marvel Cinematic Universe franchises. She portrayed Fennec Shand in “The Mandalorian,” “The Book of Boba Fett,” and “The Bad Batch.” She played Melinda May in all seasons of “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”

Wen is also known for Dr. Jing-Mei “Deb” Chen in “ER” from 1995 to 2004, Chun-Li in “Street Fighter,” and Camile Wray in “Stargate Universe.”

Ming-Na Wen’s is the 2,757th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and can be found at 6840 Hollywood Boulevard, Hollywood, CA 90028, near the El Capitan Theatre. Though she’s known for both TV and film roles, Wen’s star is officially part of the Television category, meaning it has the TV symbol on it.

The dedication ceremony was live-streamed on Tuesday morning and can be viewed in full below.

The following is the press release about Ming-Na Wen and her star from the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Ming-Na Wen Honored with a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

“Ming-Na Wen has had quite an iconic career! As Mulan, she inspired women everywhere to embrace their inner warrior.” said Ana Martinez, Producer of the Hollywood Walk of Fame. “She has always been a supporter of and has always believed in lifting female artists especially women of color and we’re excited that we’re able to recognize her achievements on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.”

Joining emcee Steve Nissen for the star unveiling will be the actresses from the film “Joy Luck Club,” Tamlyn Tomita, Lauren Tom and Rosalind Chao.

Ming-Na Wen has been an actress for a career that has spanned more than three decades. She spent her early years in Macau and Hong Kong with her mom and older brother. They came to America when she was about six years of age and lived in Queens, New York, where she learned English. Her love of acting took root when she performed in a third-grade play and made the audience laugh.

After graduating with high honors from the prestigious School of Drama at Carnegie Mellon University in 1986, Wen pursued acting in New York City. Years of working with theatre groups like the Manhattan Theatre Club, Playwright’s Horizon, and the Ensemble Studio Theatre prepared Wen for the big stage, where she fulfilled her dream to be on Broadway in 1998 with David Henry Hwang’s “Golden Child;” which received a Tony nomination and won an Obie for Best Play.

During Wen’s years in NYC, she won the part of Lien Hughes on “As the World Turns,” becoming the first contract role for an Asian American actor in a daytime drama. She would go on to pave the way for Asian Pacific Islander actors, winning roles that were not originally written for Asians. This included her seven-year run portraying Dr. Jing-Mei “Deb” Chen, working alongside talents like George Clooney and Linda Cardellini, in the Emmy Award-winning NBC series “ER.”

In 2019, Wen was named a DISNEY LEGEND, one of the highest honors and awards given by Disney, for giving life to such characters as ‘Mulan’ in the MULAN franchise, Agent May in “MARVEL’S AGENTS OF SHIELD” and ‘June’ in the seminal feature THE JOY LUCK CLUB based upon Amy Tan’s novel.

Mulan continues to inspire new generations of children and adults with her courage, heroism and integrity. Wen has since reprised her role as Mulan in numerous projects, including “Kingdom Hearts II,” “Mulan 2” and “Ralph Breaks the Internet,” which grossed over half a billion dollars.

Wen delighted her “Mulan” fans, who cheered when she made a surprise cameo in the 2020 live-action film as the Esteemed Guest.

Wen currently can be seen as Fennec Shand, who first appeared on the hit Disney+ series “The Mandalorian,” created by Jon Favreau. As the mercenary assassin Fennec, Wen’s character has quickly become a fan-favorite among the “Star Wars” audience. Wen reprises the role and stars opposite Temuera Morrison in their own Disney+ series “The Book of Boba Fett.” The two successful series have garnered a combined total of 43 Emmy nominations and 18 Emmy wins.

Up next, Wen is slated to shoot the lead of the film “Peachville” opposite Paul Giamatti and Simon Pegg. She also voices Fong Wing in HBO Max’s upcoming “Gremlins: Secrets of Mogwai,” which serves as a prequel to the 1984 film “Gremlins.”

Wen enjoys volunteering her time and energy for charities and prefers donating anonymously to people in need.

Earlier this month, “Star Wars” actress Carrie Fisher received a posthumous Hollywood Walk of Fame star.
