Disney’s newest live-action film, The Little Mermaid, raked in $117.5 million at the U.S. box office over the holiday weekend, coming in at the fifth-best opening for Memorial Day weekend in history, according to Box Office Mojo.
The remake of the 1989 Disney animated classic stars Halle Bailey as Ariel. Although critics widely praised Bailey’s character adaptation, the movie got a mixed reaction. On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, only 67% of critics gave the film a positive review.
General audiences were much more delighted with the film, with 95% giving it a thumbs up on Rotten Tomatoes.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, the film’s director, Rob Marshall, called critics’ complaints about casting a Black actor “small-minded.” Many have argued that casting a Black actress in the role helps Black children feel represented in popular culture.
Despite the movie’s controversy, it was among the most successful films ever to debut on Memorial Day, Box Office Mojo reported.

Disneyland Paris Cast Members gathered today (May 30th, 2023) to hold their biggest strike yet — causing major disruptions throughout the parks. Cast members across the resort were joined by Union La CGT to protest current wage conditions. Starting on Main Street U.S.A., all morning shows and parades were cancelled as thousands of Cast and […]
It was 20 years ago that Finding Nemo won the hearts of viewers from all over. Disneyland Paris Cast Members have been striking again this morning and afternoon (Tuesday, May 30), including in both theme parks. Cast Members are demanding better pay and working conditions.
Paris Cast Members Strike
UNSA (National Union of Autonomous Trade Unions), the Disneyland Paris Cast Member union, shared information about the strike on their Twitter account this week, writing, “Our diversity is our shield!! Let’s join forces on this last straight line, let’s continue to mobilize all DLP Cast Members to demonstrate our determination!”
DLP Report has been sharing photos and videos of the striking Cast Members on Twitter this morning. The strike began at 9:00 a.m. on May 30 outside the Imagination building, a backstage Cast Member building at Disneyland Paris. By 10:00 a.m., Cast Members were in Central Plaza in front of Le Château de la Belle au Bois Dormant (Sleeping Beauty Castle).
Cast Members were holding signs listing their demands.
In this video by DLP Report, the Cast Members marched into Fantasyland while playing the resort’s 30th anniversary song.
Main Street, U.S.A. was completely blocked off, so guests entering the park were sent through the arcades to reach attractions.
The first performance of “Dream… and Shine Brighter” was canceled.
Cast Members marched through Disneyland Park and Walt Disney Studios Park, including through Avengers Campus.
They also walked around Lake Disney and through Disney Village, Paris’ version of Downtown Disney.
At about 3:00 p.m., Cast Members were back in Central Plaza chanting “the parade is us” as another performance of “Dream… and Shine Brighter” was canceled. Some guests were cheering them on.
Ongoing Cast Member Strikes
Disneyland Paris Cast Members have been trying to incite change in their pay and conditions for months. Just a few weeks ago, a performance of Disney Stars on Parade at Disneyland Paris was canceled at the last minute due to another Cast Member strike.
A week ago, the union held a strike on Main Street, U.S.A. in Disneyland Park. Guests arriving at Disneyland Paris in the morning were directed to the arcades to reach their destinations, and some believed a show was about to start since the area was being kept clear. As the demonstration continued, guests were able to see the Cast Members chanting for change. One performance of the “Dream… Shine Brighter” Parade was canceled due to Cast Members demonstrating in this space.
Another similar situation occurred at Disneyland Paris back in February when protests against unequal pay caused one performance of “Dream…and Shine Brighter” to go on without any characters and another performance to be completely canceled.
You can watch a full performance of “Dream…and Shine Brighter” below.
