Central Florida Tourism Oversight District Administrator Interested in Creating Advisory Boards Representing District Taxpayers Like Disney Springs Business Owners

Glen Gilzean, Jr., the newly appointed district administrator for the Central Florida Toursim Oversight District, spoke at Wednesday’s District meeting about developing more advisory boards.

CFTOD Advisory Boards

“I’m going to take a lot of feedback from the community, from our constituents,” Gilzean said. “One of the ideas that I heard was developing more advisory boards, so I’m looking forward to coming to the board with descriptions of how those advisory boards will work, and other great ideas so that we are a good neighbor.”

Gilzean said he would share more specifics at a later meeting.

Disney Springs third-party business owners have expressed interest in advisory boards to represent them and other District taxpayers.

Disney Springs business owners appeared in front of the Board of Supervisors at the April 26 meeting, before Gilzean was appointed to the position of district administrator, to express their concerns about potential tolls and taxes. Steve Schussler — the owner of T-Rex, Yak & Yeti, and Rainforest Café — suggested an advisory board.

Glen Gilzean, Jr.

Glen Gilzean, Jr.

Earlier this month, Gilzean was chosen by the CFTOD Board to serve as the district’s Administrator, a role he accepted and officially began on May 10. The job comes with a $400,000 annual salary, bumped up significantly because of ongoing legal fights.

Currently, Gilzean is the Chair of Florida’s Commission on Ethics, a position Governor DeSantis appointed him to. The Commission “renders legally binding advisory opinions interpreting the ethics laws and implements the State’s financial disclosure laws.”Recently, it rejected a complaint from the MAGA Inc. Super PAC backing Donald Trump, which claimed Governor DeSantis was violating campaign finance laws and running a “shadow” campaign for President (via AP News).

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Gilzean also served on the Governor’s Re-Open Florida Task Force alongside various business and government leaders, including Josh D’Amaro (President of Walt Disney World at the time).

Outside of governmental functions, he is President and CEO of the Central Florida Urban League, with a stated goal of ending “generational poverty by empowering Central Floridians to achieve social and economic equality through education, employment and entrepreneurship.”

Glen Gilzean has been added to the list of defendants in an ongoing lawsuit between Disney and the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District Board, including Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

Disney, DeSantis, and CFTOD Board Lawsuits

bob iger ron desantis reedy creek

The Florida Governor and Walt Disney Company initially clashed over the corporation’s opposition to a much-debated and controversial Florida law regarding classroom instruction and discussion on sexual orientation and gender identity in public schools, alongside various other recent state laws and proposals in a similar vein.

Bob Chapek was Chief Executive Officer at the time and initially remained silent and passive on the issue — until massive internal criticisms from cast members and controversy over Disney’s practice of making hefty political contributions to campaigns and individuals allegedly against their own stated human principles came into focus.

In an apparent act of retribution over Chapek’s expression of dissent, the Governor moved forward with various verbal and legal assaults on Disney, including the attempted dissolution of Reedy Creek and the eventual transfer of power directly under his control. DeSantis argues he is attacking a rather vague perception of something he calls “woke politics” invading the state.

After heated exchanges and dramatic actions taken by Governor DeSantis in an apparent and self-described act of retribution, The Walt Disney Company sued the Governor and his newly handpicked board, citing a “targeted campaign of government retaliation — orchestrated at every step by Governor DeSantis as punishment for Disney’s protected speech.” The plaintiff argues that this chronology of events “threatens Disney’s business operations, jeopardizes its economic future in the region, and violates its constitutional rights.”

The CFTOD Board of Supervisors voted to file their own countersuit against Disney, essentially seeking to void and de-legitimize agreements Disney made with the previous Reedy Creek Improvement District before its forced dissolution. The new 188-page complaint names the Board itself as plaintiff against Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. The district is asking the court to render Disney’s development agreement with the Reedy Creek Improvement District as unenforceable, null, and void. They also ask the same be done of the restrictive covenants, which notably set the benchmark for expiry at 21 years after the death of the last living descendant of King Charles III, living as of the date of the document.

While Disney’s lawsuit is through federal court, the Board’s lawsuit is through Florida’s state courts.

A recent poll shows Americans think the court should rule in favor of Disney over Governor DeSantis and that citizens aren’t as worried about “woke politics” as other issues.

Redesigned Universal Orlando Resort Logos Displayed at Volcano Bay Bus Loop

The new and redesigned Universal Orlando Resort logos are now in use on a sign at the Universal Volcano Bay bus loop.

Universal Orlando Resort Logos on Sign

universal orlando bus stop sign 2745

The Universal Orlando Resort, Universal’s Islands of Adventure, and Universal CityWalk logos — along with the Uber logo — are on an A-frame sign in use at the water park’s bus stops. The Universal Orlando Resort logo resembles the Universal Studios Florida logo, with a blue globe in the background. The Universal’s Islands of Adventure logo resembles a compass, and the new CityWalk logo has pink lettering.

universal orlando bus stop sign 2747

These updated logos were revealed earlier this year, and we first saw the Universal CityWalk logo in use on a Mother’s Day sign. Take a closer look at each logo below.

Universal Islands of Adventure

redesigned islands of adventure logo

The new Universal’s Islands of Adventure logo features a version of the original globe and compass design except the globe is solid red and not a map of the world as seen in the original logo below. The compass points have been toned down to a more weathered gold color as well. The Islands of Adventure lettering also has seen some significant changes. The new logo is more refined and has a metallic-steel look to it.

Universals-Islands-of-Adventure old logo

Universal CityWalk

universal citywalk logo

The redesigned CityWalk logo has a contemporary feel with “Universal” in gold tones, “City” in fading pastel purples, and “Walk” in vibrant purple with a glowing neon effect. “City” and “Walk” are depicted stacked on top of each other or next to each other as a whole word.

UOR citywalk logo old

As you can see the new logo is quite a departure from the previous two logos below. The multi-colored one, which dates from 1999-2018, has a rock-n-roll-style design. On a solid black background, 1960s-style graphics in purple, red, and orange intersect with an orange triangle. “CityWalk” is written a jagged style with “Universal Studios” above and “Orlando” found below.

universal city walk orlando logo

This more modern logo replaced the rock-n-roll-style logo in 2018. It was much cleaner with “Universal” and “Orlando” against lime green rectangles and “CityWalk” in large block letters.

Universal Studios Florida

redesigned Universal Studios Florida logo

Above is the new logo for Universal Studios Florida. It didn’t deviate too far from the present one, however, it does have a crisper look to it. The most recent logo, from 2017, is below for comparison.

USF logo 6

The new logo differs from the previous one in several ways. Firstly, the detailed imagery of the earth has been substituted with solid, three-dimensional representations of the continents. Additionally, the logo now appears on a white background, and the text “Universal Studios Florida” has been rendered in solid gold tones. The letters no longer have the three-dimensional, cinematic quality of the previous version.

universal orlando resort logo

The new Universal Orlando Resort logo is nearly identical to the Universal Studios Florida logo.

The following two Universal Studios Florida logos have been used as simplified print versions of the detailed logo.

Below are even older versions of the Universal Studios Florida logo. The first three are from 1989-1998 and the last one is from 1998-2017.

Universal Volcano Bay

redesigned volcano bay logo

There is a notable contrast between the new Volcano Bay logo, positioned above, and its predecessor below. The updated logo has a more formal appearance, whereas the former one conveyed a playful tone.

universals volcano bay water theme park logo1

Both logos incorporate the imagery of a volcano and water, yet the new version features a golden outline while the previous design was a basic light green line drawing.

Furthermore, the water graphics display a significant divergence. As a water park, the new logo prominently showcases realistic water graphics, whereas the old logo depicted a basic graphic with shades of dark and light blue.

The BEST Disney World Restaurants for Your Kid Who Only Likes McDonald’s

Disney World restaurants have a little something for everyone.

Sonny Eclipse at Cosmic Ray’s

With dozens (honestly more like hundreds) of spots spread across the theme parks, resorts, and Disney Springs, you can find cuisine for most tastes and cultures…AND in a variety of price ranges. Whether you’re looking to try something exotic or stick to your homestyle favorites, Disney probably has something perfect for you. And today, we’re sharing our picks for the restaurants that your kiddo will like…even if they eat nothing but McDonald’s!

Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Cafe

Probably the most obvious choice is an iconic staple at Magic Kingdom — Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Cafe. This Tomorrowland quick service restaurant is known for serving burgers, hot dogs, and fries, all amidst the cosmic backdrop of the tunes of alien performer Sonny Eclipse.

1/3 lb Angus Bacon Cheeseburger

The food here is pretty simple, and the menu is full of crowd-pleasers. Plus, they’ve got a well-stocked condiments bar, so you can have as much ketchup, mustard, and mayo to your heart’s content. Perfect for particular eaters!

Click Here to Get the Low-Down On the SAUCE at Cosmic Ray’s!

Gasparilla Island Grill

For our next stop, we’ll head over to Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and visit the quick service spot there — Gasparilla Island Grill. The menu is filled with burgers, sandwiches, and a mac and cheese that we’re big fans of.

Perfection

For kiddos, they also have wraps and chicken fingers, as well as a few other choices (like Uncrustables). If you’re staying on the monorail loop, this might be a good option for a quick meal.

Click Here for Our Review of Gasparilla Island Grill!

Connections Eatery

The quick service spot with the most McDonald’s-like menu in EPCOT is a bit of a stretch, but since most of the food in this park is more exotic, it might be your best option. Connections Eatery is what we’d recommend! It’s located in World Discovery and serves burgers, pizza, and salad.

Connections Eatery

On the kids’ menu, there are chicken strips, a cheeseburger, a Grilled Chicken Bao, and a five-cheese pizza. It’s a conveniently located restaurant, nearby several rides, so you can’t really go wrong here. But we’ll warn you to make your Mobile Order in advance because this place can get busy!

Check Out Our Review of Connections Eatery Here!

Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Restaurant

For our first table service spot on the list, we’ll stop by Hollywood Studios and talk about Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Restaurant. The most interesting thing about this place is that you dine at tables shaped like cars, and they’re all facing a giant projector screen that shows old film clips…it’s an indoor drive-in movie!

Sci-Fi Dine-In

It can be hard to get a dining reservation for this spot, but the menu is a great choice for those who like simple burgers and fries. Besides burgers, you can get pasta, salad, and sandwiches.

Read Our Review of Sci-Fi Dine-In Here!

Backlot Express

For a quick service option in Hollywood Studios, we recommend Backlot Express, which is located in the Echo Lake area of the park. Basically the entire menu is burgers, sandwiches, and salads.

Backlot Express

They’ve got everything from a basic bacon cheeseburger to a Smoked BBQ Pulled Pork Burger, so you can dress it up or dress it down however you’d like. And on crowded days, there’s usually plenty of seating here spread between indoor and outdoor tables.

Click Here to Read Our Backlot Express Reviews!

Beaches & Cream Soda Shop

If you get the chance to leave the theme parks and dine at a resort, we highly recommend Beaches & Cream Soda Shop at Disney’s Beach Club. This spot is known not only for its gigantic Kitchen Sink Sundae and many delicious ice cream treats, but also for its selection of classic American eats.

Beaches & Cream Soda Shop

If you’re an ice cream lover, this is simply a can’t-miss, and for those with little ones with specific appetites, you’ll find sandwiches, a hot dog, a cheeseburger, and a macaroni & cheese on the kids’ menu.

See Our Most Recent Beaches & Cream Review Here!

Restaurantosaurus

Heading over to Animal Kingdom, we’ve got to talk about Restaurantosaurus in Dinoland, U.S.A. Not only is the theme here really fun (you can dine INSIDE an Airstream at some tables!), but it’s a pretty good crowd-pleaser spot.

Kids’ Meal at Restaurantosaurus

Burgers, chicken nuggets, and a pretty substantial condiments bar all make this restaurant pretty similar to Cosmic Ray’s — so if you like that spot, make sure to try out this restaurant as well.

See Our Restaurantosaurus Review Here!

D-Luxe Burger

Now let’s talk about Disney Springs! Located near Guest Relations is D-Luxe Burger, which is a Disney-owned spot with Mobile Order availability (that’s a little more rare in Disney Springs!), that serves…you guessed it…burgers!

D-Luxe Burger

They have basic burgers available, but they also offer specialty and seasonal creations, plus some delicious milkshake options. It’s conveniently located near plenty of shopping options and close to Gideon’s Bakehouse and Sprinkles — so you could get a dessert afterward!

See Our D-Luxe Burger Thoughts Here!

Planet Hollywood

Our table service pick for Disney Springs is Planet Hollywood, located right across from the Orange parking garage and the Coca-Cola store. This restaurant serves a pretty basic American-style menu, but you’ll get to enjoy a sing-along while you dine and check out some cool celebrity memorabilia.

Planet Hollywood

It’s not usually our top pick for dining in Disney Springs, but if you’ve got some picky eaters on your hands, it might be just what you’re looking for.

Read Our Planet Hollywood Review Here!

Value Resorts Food Courts

And finally, we have to talk about the food courts at the Value Resorts. This list includes spots like World Premiere Food Court, Landscape of Flavors, and Everything POP, to name a few. Most of these hotel food courts have similar menus, and in general, they’ve got a good selection of burgers and American fare.

Landscape of Flavors

Disney tries to keep the menus at these spots broad and good for a variety of palettes, since they’re generally the main places to dine at the Value Resorts. Because of this, you’re more guaranteed to find something that fits your tastes — although we can’t promise it’ll be the best food you’ll eat on your trip.

See Our Thoughts on Everything POP Here!

That’s our list of the best places to dine for people with an affinity for McDonald’s! We’ll keep you in the loop with any dining changes at Disney World, as well as our recommendations for places to eat, so stay tuned to DFB for the latest.

Movie Review: “The Boogeyman” Keeps Thing Simple and Scary with a Great Cast and Skillful Execution

When I was a kid, the word “Boogeyman” conjured up a particularly frightening foe from the animated The Real Ghostbusters series. As I grew up, I came to learn that this term had been around for well more than a century, frightening children since the mid-1800s. In 1973, renowned horror author Stephen King penned an acclaimed short […]
