For those wishing to show some school pride, a new Monsters University Spirit Jersey is available at Magic Kingdom, in Star Traders of Tomorrowland.
Monsters University Spirit Jersey – $79.99
The design is partitioned into a gray lower half and blue upper half, including the sleeves. “Monsters” is spelled out in a plaid style, and various school icons are arranged like they may have appeared on a student’s college dorm wall. This includes a pennant for Mike Wazowski and a foam finger, among others.
On the front, the university’s logo rests in the top right, with its opening year of 1313 displayed and the motto “Scaring is caring.” More pennants can be seen, along with various accolades for the university’s sports teams: a league championship for some sort of basketball that involves horns, and a divisional title for a monster-fied version of soccer in which the ball appears to be a crawling insect.
“Monsters University” is a prequel to the 2001 Pixar film “Monsters, Inc.” — revolving around the eponymous college. In the original, the main characters Mike and Sulley were already established as close partners, roommates, and best friends from the very beginning. Here, they meet for the first time, and first impressions are less than stellar.
When their bitterness and rivalry ultimately cause the pair to fail an exam they desperately needed to pass in order to be accepted into the school’s scare program, Mike makes a deal with the Dean (Hardscrabble): he will compete in the Scare Games, and if his team wins, every member will be accepted as scare students. If he loses, he’ll leave the university for good.
Mike, Sulley, and a fledgling group of misfits in the Oozma Kappa fraternity are forced to work together if they wish to keep their dreams alive and overcome the arrogant and mean-spirited front-runners — Roar Omega Roar.
This has arrived in time for the movie’s tenth anniversary next month. Financially, this prequel was a hit, grossing almost $750 million, enough to surpass its predecessor and other Pixar favorites such as “Up.” It has spawned a range of merchandise tapping into the fun and humorous side of a school for monsters.

Disney Buffets When the parks and resorts reopened in July 2020, buffet dining felt like a thing of the past. All buffet restaurants ceased to serve buffets for many, many months. They were replaced with “family-style” meals which are just larger […]

Disney World’s closure of the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser in September will enable them to claim a write-off of approximately $300 million, as stated by Disney Parks Chairman Josh D’Amaro during the JP Morgan Global Technology, Media & Communications Conference.
$300 Million Tax Write Off
Disney Parks Chairman Josh D’Amaro spoke during the JP Morgan Global Technology, Media & Communications Conference today. He indicated the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser did not perform as well as Disney had hoped, but will ultimately lead to a significant tax break for the company.
Following the hotel’s closure, depreciation is expected to accelerate at a rate of $100 million to $150 million per quarter over a span of two quarters.
I don’t think we’ve talked about this before, but in both Q3 and Q4 as we accelerate depreciation on that Starcruiser, we should expect about $100-150 million acceleration in depreciation.
Josh D’Amaro, Disney Parks Chairman
Josh D’Amaro also spoke on the excellent guest experience found on the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser; however, since the Hyperion did not bring in enough guests, the immersive experience will be closing this fall.
Though on the surface, this depreciation may sound negative, the company is pleased with the value reduction because of taxation. According to the IRS, “depreciation is an annual income tax deduction that allows you to recover the cost or other basis of certain property over the time you use the property. It is an allowance for the wear and tear, deterioration, or obsolescence of the property.” By reducing the value of the Galactic Starcruiser hotel, Disney will be required to pay less tax on the property overall.
Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser Closing
Last week, Disney made the surprise announcement that they’d be closing their themed hotel aimed at immersive storytelling permanently after only one year and a few months of operation. Starcruiser has been burdened since before its opening, shrouded in financial troubles, budget cuts, high prices, low occupancy, and inconsistent levels of satisfaction when individuals compare what was delivered with what was initially promised in conceptual stages. Above all, the struggling resort was prohibitively expensive for the vast majority of potentially interested guests, with costs frequently exceeding multiple thousands of dollars for a brief, two-night stay.
