More scrim and scaffolding have come down at Minion Café in the future Illumination Avenue at Universal Studios Florida, revealing what looks like the start of a sign for the restaurant.
Minion Café Marquee
The façade is still clearly unfinished, although has the shape of various city buildings all right next to each other.
The sign is still covered by a blue tarp on an overhang.
At first, we couldn’t be sure that it was a sign.
But thanks to the wind, we got a brief look at letters under the tarp.
We could see a steel letter E and possibly the letter F, suggesting the tarp is covering the word “Café.”
The steel letters look unfinished, like they may be covered in more colorful layers later on.
A steel beam above the overhang, with two supports sticking up vertically, could be where the word “Minion” will be installed, creating a marquee that fully reads “Minion Café.”
On the left side of the tarp, there does seem to be the curve of a C.
This sign faces the main thoroughfare of Universal Studios Florida, which is currently Production Central but will eventually be Illumination Avenue.
More Minion Café Construction
The section of the façade still covered by scrim looks more complete. It resembles red brick with white marble along the top.
At least one crew member was hard at work behind the scrim.
Beneath the sign’s overhang, we can just barely see inside the building, which is currently just plain white.
This corner of the building looks similar to the façade of Minion Café at Universal Studios Hollywood (pictured below), which is much smaller.
The details aren’t exactly the same, but the Universal Studios Florida Minion Café could get gray bricks and fake windows similar to the Hollywood version.
There are spaces painted orange-brown that could be for fake windows. The black sections of the façade will be covered in themed paneling.
A sheet of paper was peeling away from one section.
Something has been installed beneath the overhang, perhaps lighting fixtures.
They are currently covered in plastic to keep them protected during construction.
On the other end of the building, facing Villain-Con Minion Blast, scaffolding and scrim have gone back up. We could previously see more of this façade.
We can still see the overhang at the far end, closest to the show building of Transformers: The Ride 3D.
This remains unfinished, with a white tarp across the top of the overhang. Vertical supports here could hold up another sign.
The red brick façade next to that overhang is now blocked from view. This probably means crew members are actively working on it again.
Read a Minion Café review from Universal Studios Hollywood. The Florida version will reportedly have a similar menu but with a few different items. Universal will push mobile ordering at the new quick-service restaurant. They started hiring Minion Café Team Members last month.
It’s rumored Mel’s Drive-In will close for a refurbishment this summer at the same time Minion Café will open.
Illumination Avenue
Illumination Avenue will include the pre-existing Despicable Me Minion Mayhem — which just had its façade refurbished — as well as the new Illumination’s Villain-Con Minion Blast and Minion Café.
Villain-Con Minion Blast replaces Shrek 4-D, which permanently closed in January 2022. Villain-Con was featured in the first “Minions” spinoff movie, and the ride will feature various villains from the franchise, including the Vicious 6. The ride will purportedly be a shooting attraction with guests on a moving walkway.
Villain-Con Minion Blast and Minion Café are scheduled to open this summer.
Production Central is also home to Transformers: The Ride 3D and Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit. At this time, the exact layout of Illumination Avenue is unclear in terms of dividing the area up as the Minions attractions currently sit between Transformers: The Ride 3D and Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit.
