We saw the scrim has been removed from Tom Sawyer Island at Disneyland after the fire during “”Fantasmic!” in late April.
Scrim Down at Tom Sawyer Island
While the scrim has come down from Tom Sawyer Island, the walls which prevent people from going to the stage area are still up.
Construction is far from over in this space. Cast Members still have a lot of work to do to repair the island for park visitors and for the “Fantasmic!” nighttime spectacular.
Previously, a large green scrim stood in this space. Black scrim also covered part of the rockwork. Below is a reminder photo for you:
Now, we can see all of it has been completely removed.
The black scrim that covered this rockwork is gone.
Here’s a view of the stage from another side.
There’s still a significant amount of work materials on the island.
“Fantasmic!” Fire
At the end of April, a malfunction in the Maleficent dragon caused a fire on Tom Sawyer Island during “Fantasmic!” at Disneyland. Only three days following this event that resulted in an evacuation of the western end of Disneyland Park and the total destruction of the dragon itself, new construction walls were up around Tom Sawyer Island. One of the temporarily closed attractions — Davy Crockett’s Explorer Canoes — was running once again.
Take a look at our video of the incident below.
During the “Fantasmic!” performance, the Maleficent dragon dripped flammable liquid and dropped a fireball onto Tom Sawyer Island. The dragon collapsed as crews raced to extinguish the fire. Future performances of “Fantasmic!” have been removed from the Disneyland schedule. The current status as stated by Disney is as follows:
Performances of Fantasmic! are currently paused. We know our Guests love and miss Fantasmic!, and Disneyland Resort teams are working hard to assess when we can bring back an adjusted show as quickly and safely as possible.
Six Disneyland Cast Members were treated for smoke inhalation by Anaheim Fire & Rescue, though luckily, no serious injuries were reported. All guests were escorted far away from the area and large swaths of the park closed early out of an abundance of caution.
“Fantasmic!,” is a nighttime spectacular which first debuted in Disneyland on May 13, 1992. The show stars Mickey Mouse as he explores the possibilities of his imagination, but the Disney Villains team up in an attempt to create an unstoppable nightmare for him. Featuring characters and music from Disney films including “Fantasia,” “The Jungle Book,” and “Pirates of the Caribbean,” the show incorporates projections on screens of water, pyrotechnics, and both the Sailing Ship Columbia and Mark Twain Riverboat as they sail past guests on the Rivers of America.
