Ron DeSantis Signed Transportation Bill Targeting Disney’s Monorail System

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis recently signed 37 bills and one of those being a transportation bill that includes a provision that would make the monorail system at the Walt Disney World subject to increased state oversight.

The bill’s proper name is HB 1305, which includes a provision that doesn’t outright mention the system but would make the monorail subject to state inspections. Remembering that this bill came from the ongoing feud between DeSantis and Disney is also important. Let’s take a look at what the provision says.

“Any governmentally or privately owned fixed-guideway transportation systems operating in this state which are located within an independent special district created by local act which have boundaries within two contiguous counties” will be subject to state “minimum safety standards.”

This bill also included the requirement that the monorail must be suspended during safety inspections by the Florida Department of Transportation. This will go into effect on July 1st, 2023. Disney and other large-scale theme parks currently conduct their own safety inspections, but Disney is the only property that is being affected by the bill.

The only question I have regarding this is whether this will affect the Skyliner since it is technically a “fixed guideway transportation system.”
