A “Code A” is BAD NEWS in Disney World. Here’s What It Means.

While Disney World is a dream most of the time, things do go awry at times. Sometimes, things can get downright creepy.

When things don’t go according to plan at Disney World, the Cast Members need a way to communicate with each other without disturbing or frightening guests. That’s where a sort of “code language” comes in! Yep, the Cast Members at Disney World have code words and a secret language for all sorts of things, from how to discreetly communicate that someone has vomited to what they say in order to keep chaos at a minimum if an ambulance is called. Today, we have another code word that Cast Members use at Disney World, and it’s about to get really spooky. Let’s go!

Sometimes, you might hear Cast Members talking about a “Code A” while in the Disney Parks. What’s a Code A, you might ask? Well, there’s no easy way to say it. A ‘Code A’ means that human remains have been found in a ride or attraction.

So spooky!

Don’t get too freaked out, alright? The ‘A’ stands for ashes. Yep, Disney World visitors sometimes spread the ashes of loved ones inside their favorite rides and attractions at Disney World, as a way of leaving a piece of them in their happy place. However, one ride receives more Code As than the others.

Yep, it’s the Haunted Mansion! A former Haunted Mansion Cast Member confirmed that a great deal of ride closures and downtimes at the spooky attraction were due to Code As.

Guests frequently scatter the ashes of loved ones throughout the ride, but it doesn’t go under the radar. Usually, the ashes scatter enough so that evidence is left behind on the Doom Buggies. If a Code A is suspected, you might see Cast Members hopping into a Doom Buggy or walking around the attraction with a black light.

A weird thing about ashes is that they GLOW, and they have a bit of a pink tint to them underneath the black light. Once Cast Members confirm with the black light that ashes have been spilled, a maintenance team has to come clean up the ashes in a suit that looks like it came straight out of Ghostbusters. This means that yep, the ride has to be closed so that the maintenance crew can clean up the biohazard.

A special thing that Haunted Mansion Cast Members like to do at this point is play the Ghostbusters theme song over the intercom as the clean-up takes place. What? Those maids may be straight-faced, but they do know how to have a good time.

So… if you ever hear Cast Members discussing a Code A, our best advice is that you steer clear! After all, you wouldn’t want a ghost to follow you home, would you? Just kidding. A biohazard is much spookier than a ghost.
