During a recent media event in New Orleans, Disney shared a behind-the-scenes look at how the story and ride are coming together, combining familiar characters with new ones.

We already knew that a few familiar characters from The Princess and the Frog would be part of Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, including Tiana herself, Prince Naveen, Mama Odie, and Louis. Disney shared that, in total, there will be 17 characters as part of the ride!

Some of the new characters will include instrument-playing animals like an otter who plays the fiddle. A raccoon and beaver will also be part of the musical ensemble. During the media event, Disney detailed how they used croak cans to create bullfrog noises for the ride. A croak can is basically a can with a sting across the top that you pull a bow across to create a sound that’s similar to a bullfrog croak.

Foley artists recorded all kinds of sounds that you might hear in a bayou for the attraction, like noises you’d hear from frogs, bugs, and birds. They built various tools to produce those sounds, similar to the method that Jimmy McDonald (the original head of the Disney sound effects department) made use of in his time.

We learned that there will be several new audio-animatronics in Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, and we’ll get to see Tiana in a few different outfits as the storyline progresses through the ride.

Mama Odie will make several appearances as well.

Do you remember Ralphie, Prince Naveen’s little brother, who you see dancing with Charlotte at the end of The Princess and the Frog? He’ll be part of the attraction as well! Disney said that Ralphie is learning the drums.

Disney says that this concept art illustrates how the ride will “bring the invigorating sounds of New Orleans to life,” as “the joie de vivre [is] influencing his every movement as he jams to the beat of his songful soul.”
