Big Thunder Mountain
Big Thunder Mountain is a fixture at 2/3 of Disney’s castle parks, with a cousin at one more. The original attraction first opened on September 2, 1979 at Disneyland, with further iterations at the Magic Kingdom on November 15, 1980, Tokyo Disneyland on July 4, 1987, and finally Disneyland Paris on opening day, April 12, 1992.
All of the attractions follow a similar backstory, with details differing by location. The general story goes that a mining company opened a very successful mine and built a railway to transport the ore. But tragedy struck one day, closing the mine and causing the nearby town to become destitute. The original rockwork in Disneyland is based on Bryce Canyon in Utah, while the others take more inspiration from Monument Valley in Arizona.
Imagineer Tony Baxter designed the attraction and adapted it to all four of its locales, including the park he championed — Disneyland Paris. In France, the attraction takes the place of Tom Sawyer Island, sitting at the center of the Rivers of America. Guests board the train on the mainland before a tunnel takes them across the river to the coaster’s track.
Rather than ordering yet another clone of Big Thunder Mountain, Hong Kong Disneyland decided to go its own way with the Big Grizzly Mountain Runaway Mine Cars, and boy is that a mouthful of a name. The attraction features a similar backstory, having served as the mine carts for the town of Grizzly Gulch. But some well-meaning bears have since taken over the mine, which causes a bit of havoc when guests ride their trains through the now-abandoned mine.
