Sonny Eclipse has been taking some extra long lunch breaks from his music set at Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Café in Magic Kingdom this week.
Sonny Eclipse Missing
We first noticed Sonny wasn’t performing on June 7. His entire set can be raised into the ceiling to accommodate bands and DJs during special events. His stage had been raised out of sight, but there was nobody else performing that day.
On June 8, Sonny was back.
However, he was missing again on June 9.
Taking a look up at the ceiling, beneath Sonny’s stage, we saw a fluid collection bag with a hose leading out of it.
This could mean Sonny is out of commission due to a leak, possibly from the ceiling or his own hydraulic fluid.
Sonny leaked fluid in April of this year during a collapse on stage. He returned quickly in working order after the mishap.
Earlier this year, Sonny was gone for several weeks, before returning freshly refurbished. His appearance and audio hadn’t changed, but he was moving better.
Sonny Eclipse
Sonny performs an approximately 26-minute set on a loop throughout the day. His set consists of eight songs written by George Wilkins and Kevin Rafferty, including “My Name is Sonnny Eclipse,” “Hello Space Angels,” and “Yew Nork, Yew Nork.”
The character is said to be from the planet Zork. His backup singers are the invisible Space Angels. Sonny’s “cousin” is Officer Zzzzyxxx, an animatronic that appeared in the Tokyo Disneyland version of Star Tours until 2012. He was created using the same mold as Sonny so they share a face.
Sonny was first installed in Magic Kingdom during the 1994 Tomorrowland refurbishment. Sonny is now featured on a poster in the Merchant of Venus seating area in Tomorrowland.
The musician Kal David who voiced Sonny Eclipse passed away last year at age 79.
